By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

SPA Treatments

Does anyone know if any Spa treatments (massage, facials, body wraps, etc) have an effect on warfarin?

No, I'm sure they don't. I wasn't able to get a deep tissue massage until I was a year out because of a fear of dislodging clots but all the other things couldn't possibly effect your INR. You're not ingesting anything. And I think you probably deserve some spa treatments right now!!!

I'm going for both a facial and massage this weekend! There's no effect on warfarin, but if you have a newer clot, like jvfrugal says, it may be ill advised. Some Spas may have a policy about warfarin use and massages. Also, depending on how rough the massage is ,you could potentially bruise.

Funny story from the "seemed like a good idea at the time" file: I had a 15 minute chair massage last year at one of those kiasks in the mall. Holy mother of ... this guy beat the crap out of me. He started pounding on my back, thighs and calves. I had to tell him to stop, twice. I had bruises on my lower back. It was not your spa experience, that's for sure.
