I'm a naturally quiet person. My mom said she used to pinch me as a baby just to make sure I could cry. It takes a lot to get a loud reaction from me. This is why I asked AI today, why coworkers, family and others are in my face loud trying to get a rise out of me. I love the AI response:
People often compete with quiet people because they misread your silence as weakness, a hidden threat, or a blank canvas to project their own insecurities onto. Your calm energy can accidentally trigger their need to prove themselves.
Why People Compete With You
- Insecurity: They feel unsure of themselves. They use you as a mirror to test their own worth.
- Quiet Power: Your calm and steady mood makes loud people nervous. They feel a quiet person holds hidden strength.
- Proving a Point: They see your lack of reaction as a challenge. They want to force a big reaction out of you.
- Control: Aggressive people test boundaries. They push you to see if you will back down.
How to Handle It
- Stay Calm: Do not match their loud energy. Your steady silence takes away their fuel.
- Set Clear Limits: Use a short, firm sentence to stop bad behavior. Look them in the eye.
- Do Not Engage: You do not have to race or fight back. Let them tire themselves out.
- Save Your Energy: Focus only on your own goals. Their contest is entirely in their own head.

Definitely, save your energy. Sometimes people speak louder if there is more noise in the room. Like in a big room where everyone is in cubicles and on the phone with customers. We don't realize we are talking so loudly. Remember we want to respond with logical rational ideas and not react with angry, illogical or irrational emotional outbursts.

i'm another naturally quiet person. personally, i don't do competitive conversation, nor do i worry over why other people do what they do. my own method of handling them is to simply walk away, in the quiet ways i prefer. you win. let me know where to send your trophy.

A loud person isn’t always aggressive just like a quiet person isn’t always calm.

Quiet person here too! My best friend can't believe that I got in trouble for talking too much in 7th grade and my desk was placed next to the teacher's desk to control my talking!

I sometimes drink almond milk. It seems to last longer than regular cow milk (funny.... auto texting had typed coworkers milk). I've also tried oat, rice and soy. What plant milks have you tried?

I watched a great video on YouTube this morning. I think the speaker's name is Tim Fletcher. It was about feeling unheard as a child. I distinctly remember sitting at the kitchen table with my family, everyone talking, no one listening. I just kept quiet and ate. I have had a feeling of being unheard for some parts of my life, with some people. I have had some fabulous friends over...
