Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

I was wondering how many of you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea?
I had a sleep study back in 2009, long before my pe's, and was diagnosed with severe apnea. I had 40 something events per hour. Silly me, never followed through with the second study because I stupidly did not take it seriously. Even after my PE's, I did not really think about although my pulmonologist did want me to go for another sleep study. She did not however tell me the direct link apnea has to clotting. I suppose I could have made that obvious connection on my own, but I kept brushing it aside.
Yesterday, I went to my ENT who had scheduled the first study in '09, updated him on my health issues, and he is sending me directly to the second study rather than start at the beginning again, which is what I was hoping for. He feels that more than likely the severity of my apnea in combination with my being a smoker is what caused my clot. He is the first doctor who actually verbalized that.
Anyway, again, was just wondering who else has been diagnosed if anyone?

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
turns our for some unknown reason my daytime 02 reason were frequently dropping into the low 80's. and the night reading were dropping often in the low 80's high 90's/ so for the time being till testin is done i am on day and night o2 big time the pits. so now to the polminowligist first he said sleep apnea can do the, also the can be a hole in the heart which can also account fot the last few few year reassurance of monster migraines. so in the near future we are doing the sleep study, i sure hope he finds some answers soon,
also about thee months ago i lost the right in my right eye 80% i had the surgery and balled my eyes out. i could read two lines below the 20/20.originally i was told i way not get much back since i loss is frim a stroke and large cataract. it was the plaque infrom of the retino the doc believed was irreparable.who hooo i can see .two week till the next one.
I am not saying apnea caused my PE. I just did not realize it could have been a contributing factor until recently.
I was about 20-25 lbs overweight at the time of my initial study, so that certainly did not help. According to the doctor though, the biggest problem for me... and this is kinda funny... my tongue is too big! LOL Everytime he has tried to put the tube down my throat to look around, he can't get past the back of my tongue and even see my vocal cords!
Jean, it's gonna be so romantic for both of you having masks and machines to deal with while in bed! At some point in every relationship, there is a moment when you think, yep, the party is over.
When we talk about causes of clotting, whether it's PE or DVT, it's imortant to remember that there usually is not just one single cause. There ARE things that we call a catalyst, or tipping point, to a series of risk factors: A 40 year old woman with genetic predispositons on birth control pills, with a low funtioning thyroid, overweight, smoker, sedentary with sleep apnea who takes a long plane flight is a time bomb. We are likely to say, well, it's the BC pills or the flight that caused the clots, when in fact it's the combo platter.
Looking back on it, I think of all the years I was on birth control and smoked and just how dangerous that was. But of course, you go with the "that won't happen to me" theory. And now, I can easily identify many things that could have played a role. It sounds silly, but there is something about hearing it from a doctor for me. As if it validates what I already know/knew. And I suppose, in part, I am a bit angry with myself for not addressing this particulr issue when it came up. The fact that I brushed it off, and knowing what I know now, irritates me! To think there are so many little things in my life that I could have changed but didn't. Ahhhh hindsight!
There's that great line in the movie The Natural. I think I've posted it so many times so it seems trite, but I really believe it to be true. Glenn Close's character says:
"I believe we have two lives... the life we learn with and the life we live with after that."
The large tongue, small mouth thing reminds of of the "I'm not fat, I'm big boned" thing. Actually I am big boned but really, how that relates to the width of my ass is a bit of a stretch.
