I find it interesting that they point the finger at travel as the most common cause of clots. Also, the information about cabin pressure being a factor, people over 6'1" being more at risk, and adults UNDER 30 being at increased risk is all news to me. Wonder what their sources are.

Blood clots: 4 things you need to know
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton was hospitalized Sunday for a blood clot that formed after her she fell and suffered a concussion a few weeks ago.
The clot was discovered during a follow-up exam related to the concussion, said Clinton's spokesman, Philippe Reines, deputy assistant secretary of state. Clinton, 65, was expected to remain at New York Presbyterian Hospital for the next 48 hours for monitoring and treatment with anticoagulants - drugs that prevent clots from forming or prevent them from growing larger.
While Reines did not specify where the clot was found, the fact Clinton is being treated with anticoagulants may offer a clue, says Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and CNN chief medical correspondent.
"If this were a blood clot on top of the brain or around the brain, you wouldn't treat it with blood thinners, or anticoagulants, ****Right here( blood thinners are not anticoagulants?)****** because that could worsen the bleeding and prevent an operation from being performed, if that is necessary," Gupta says.
Blood clots most often develop deep in leg veins, and symptoms are easily missed. The medical term for blood clots developing in the large veins of the leg or pelvis is deep vein thrombosis (DVT). An estimated 2 million Americans develop DVT each year.
Here are the four things you need to know about blood clots:
1. DVT is not life-threatening (most of the time)
Most cases of DVT are simply treated with a blood thinner that breaks up the clot******Right here, they break up clots? Since when???*** and prevents it from migrating to different areas in the body. However, if left untreated, DVT can result in a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when the blood clot travels from the leg to the lungs. It accounts for nearly 200,000 deaths a year.
2. Travelers have the highest risk
A large long-term study published in the journal PLoS One in 2007 found the more frequently a person travels, the higher their risk. This is because blood clots are generally caused by sluggish blood flow through the vein, usually from sitting in cramped positions for long periods of time. Experts say most cases of DVT develop on flights over four hours in length. Some studies show the cabin pressure of an airplane also plays a role. Most people think DVT strikes just older adults, but research shows that women taking birth control pills, people over 6 feet 1 inch tall, and adults under 30 are at increased risk.
3. There are warning signs
If your leg, ankle or foot is swelling, cramping or feel warm to the touch, that may be a sign of a DVT blood clot. Also, sudden onset of shortness of breath, anxiety or chest pain may be a warning of pulmonary embolism, or a blockage in a lung.
4. Keep the blood flowing
The most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of developing a blood clot is to get up and walk around every 30 to 45 minutes to keep the blood flowing in your legs. If you are stuck at your desk at work, or on an airplane and can't get up, simply pumping your leg/foot or rotating your ankle can help to get the blood moving. Staying hydrated is also essential. Alcohol and anything with caffeine can add to dehydration and up your risk of developing a blood clot.

At least they published the absolute risk, not the relative risk.
"The main finding of this study is that the absolute risk of VT after of a long-haul flight is lowonly one passenger out of nearly 5,000 is likely to develop VT because of flying."
[And who knows if that one passenger was on birth control, had genetic predispositions or..... or..... or.]

Overweight I can understand. Certainly taking birth control. But 'short or tall'. Hmmm. Not medium height? O.k. ---- even tall---- they'd have to fold their legs to fit in the seats. But short???? The report mentioned a possible reason as the popliteal vein having pressure on it. (Something I asked when I first joined DS but I received very little response.)
Later in the report:

Uncertainty. Hmmm.
The entire report if rife with 'hypotheses' 'uncertainties' 'may be explained's' and so forth.
I think I'll just sorta ignore the findings. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :)

You state that She Clinton is on blood thinners.
Most probably this is a misnomer used even by doctors.
Unless she's on some very new med, she's on the tried and true coumadin.
This does not change the viscosity of blood (drink water for that and no dehydrating like coffee alcohol.). What It does is restrict the clotting factor of blood by affecting Vitamin K. I just had blood clots go to my lungs a year ago, from sitting too long and little exercise and that was my danger as well as "one" of hers now.
The blood "THINNERS" don't dissolve the clots they just stop new ones from forming. The body has to dissolves the clots on it's own.
If she's on one of the new anti coagulation meds, the caveat with them is there's no way to reverse bleeding in case of a cut or any other bleeding event. There is a test called INR she would be taking if on coumadin , levels for a starting case would be built up to, from 2 to 3 and that this level would be reached before her release. Then testing 2 times a week then once them every month for 6 months I am guessing. Since you state this is her second time with clots. She may be declared a lifer. That is lifelong on an anticoagulant. If coumadin, it has side affects like coldness, fatigue and what most call a mental fog. In my case bad memory. I'm off it now and I feel much better. She may get to use the very new anticoagulants. But with the risk of bleeding, that in my judgement would disqualify her from "Commander in Chief". There is a drug called a thrombotic, In my case TPA that is a 1 hour drip in the hospital that is a last resort drug used because there is a small 6%? chance of a stroke. Sounds like she wouldn't have needed this. It's the one that actually dissolves clots. Used in extreme life saving emergencies.
Long sitting like on airplanes, precipitates clotting. Best prevention id to get up at least every hour and get the lower leg blood circulating. Lose weight, walk 30 mins every day. I take an aspirin and Vitamin E .

The issue of her political aspirations will be a mystery to us mere readers for a long time.The doctors have issued their usual "she'll be fine" PR statement and I hope she will. On a personal note it would really be interesting to see how a strong-minded woman with lots of experience would handle the POTUS job. (grin)
