By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

PEs & Pneumonia - Common?

Hi there. I had a PE in each lung some years ago and have noticed that since then, I've had two cases of pneumonia since and am wondering if damage from the PEs could have played a part? The pain had been in the same area both times.

Not sure. You may want to get a pneumonia vaccine. It'll protect you from most types of pneumonia. It was recommended to me by a nurse, shortly after I was diagnosed, as a precaution, not because I was more susceptible to pneumonia, but rather so I wouldn't have to fight pneumonia while I was still having shortness of breath and the start of pain during my PE recovery.

I know pneumonia can be caused by not breathing deeply and using all parts of your lungs, which is sometimes hard to do when you're recovering from PE, especially is you're short of breath and/or it hurts to breath deeply.

When I was in the hospital, my doctor wanted me to try to take deep breath at least once an hour in order to prevent pneumonia. I never got pneumonia, so I guess it worked!

I know I've heard the same thing with other, similar types of issues. Like our mayor fell off his bike a couple years ago and cracked ribs and they kept in the hospital a couple days just to remind him to take deep breaths occasionally so he wouldn't get pneumonia.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
