Antibiotics

Went to Urgent Care last night after work because I've had a stuffy nose for over a week now. The P.A. prescribed me amoxicillin but I read you can't take that while on a blood thinner. I made sure to tell her I was on Eliquis and I even asked if she was sure I could take this antibiotic. Anyone else taken an antibiotic on a blood thinner?

If you're concerned about interactions, double-check with your pharmacist and get a second opinion. One of the advantages of the newer anticoagulants is they don't interact with all the stuff that warfarin interacts with so you might be just fine.

I'm on warfarin and I've taken antibiotics frequently due to sinus issues. I usually have to keep an eye on my INR for a few days to see how the antibiotics will affect things. My doc works with me to adjust my dose while I'm taking the antibiotic and I'm usually fine and stay completely in range.

It's possible that you were reading outdated information, as amoxacillin can interact with warfarin... but you're not taking warfarin. Warfarin and Eliquis are VERY different beasts. Check with your pharmacist to see if it interacts with Eliquis and go from there.

If you Google amoxicillin and eliquis, it doespecially say they can interact but that doesn't mean you can't take it. It may just be a matter of your doctor monitoring you more closely while on the antibiotic. Sounds like it can increase the effect of the eliquis. It may be though that is more a concern with at risk populations. Ask the pharmacist if there's anything you need to keep an eye on.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
