Winter Solstice

Today is the Winter Solstice. The longest night of the year. The days start getting longer tomorrow. YAY!!! Here comes the sun.

And the longest day of the year in my dear old hometown of Montevideo, way down below the equator about as far south of it as South Carolina is north of it. I was online on sites last night where I could look at photos that made me feel as if I were right there in the flesh.

It's so warm and summery there right now. Christmas is the first big summer holiday, followed by the hot summer fireworks of New Year's, but the big event that follows is Carnaval (Mardi Gras in New Orleans). The "llamadas' or call outs of the murgas or crewes for the parades will begin. Parades plural, not one parade singular: Montevideo has the longest Carnaval season in the world, even longer than Rio's. There are parades in every neighborhood every day for 40 days. The guys are working on their Carnaval costumes, the sounds of their rehearsals' candombe drums are echoing in the alleys.

My absolute favorite part of living in Ecuador was no solstices. 12 hour day, 12 hour nights, 12 months a year. The experience sure heightened my awareness of what solstices, both summer and winter, do to the entire eco-system.

Add in the human mandated factors like global holidays and academic/fiscal calendar years and. . .

Why would we be any less than confused?

Yes, the sun returning is something I'm really looking forward to. The dark and cold is the pits.

    I did the dumbest thing today.  I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds.  I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym.  What a dummy!
