Since I don't know your grampa, I couldn't begin to guess those possibilities, but I do know I don't trust my own recovery to any one source. I solidly believe that it takes a village to accomplish effective healing. If I had a grampa (never did) to ask, I would still be looking to expand my therapy village while we negotiated his place in the village.

I wonder how old you are and whether you need to rely upon your Grampa to get a therapist? There might be ways to get one without his help. If we knew a little more about your situation we could respond accordingly.

I'm 17 and I think I need him to get me one ... I'm not sure. I was told I have to be 18 before I can do it myself.

If you're in school then you might be able to find a counselor through your school, or by talking to someone at the school they could also advocate for you with your grampa about getting a counselor or therapist. I never thought about whether a 17 year old could go for therapy on their own ... I wonder.

hi, some schools have a counselor or can arrange for one for you. you can talk about things here with everyone or you can speak privately to someone you feel comfortable with here. to do that privately you use the private message. you click on the person's name - in blue - and then choose message - it will send your message privately to only that person. you can also journal privately - you have to actually select the only me option in order to keep it private.

Not at all true that you need to wait until you are 18 to find therapy on your own, Angel. In addition to the school options there are options ranging from alateen to some police station to churches and local youth groups. Allot depends on where you are.

Don't wait, Angel. Sooner is better. The load is easier when shared.

Depending on your school...going to the school counselor. Or even calling child protection services directly.

If you were the victim of a crime, there may even be public funds to provide you with counseling (There is in Pennsylvania anyway. My son had his bike stolen and he was given paperwork about it. Which is a bit silly for a stolen bike, but all "victims" are given the information.) Call the non-emergency number for your local police station to ask about it. It may be available even if the crime was never reported.

Hi Angel and welcome to DS, there are many here who having challenges, and from my own experience, those who 'live' the challenge can really support you. For therapy, if your Grandfather won't bring you to a therapist, you could ask him to take you to a gp/regular doctor. Be as honest as you can with what is going on in your life and the doctor will no doubt address what she/he thinks is best for your wellbeing. In the mean time, school psychologist and alateen might be most accessible for you, and both are Private. My heart goes out to you, gentle hugs, keep writing. Take care of yourself, ML
