Well, a week ago Friday, I was hit by a major trigger completely unexpectedly. My oldest son sent me photos from the emergency room, showing his broken foot.
To explain, March 13, 2017 my younger son had to go to the emergency room for what was thought to be an appendicitis. They kept him at the hospital to do surgery the following morning. When they went in for his apppendix they discovered that he had very advanced cancer. Which began the worst year of all of our lives.
So, when eldest sent pics from 1200 miles away, in the emergency room, it triggered me badly. I freaked out somewhat, but mananged to get it under control and maintain something resembling "normal" functioning.
His foot is broken in 3 places, ortho boot and no work for 6 weeks minimum. It was a clean break and did not {thankfully} require surgery or pins.
Now that the crisis has settled, I find that I'm ready to fall apart and am struggling badly. Maybe it will help that he is supposed to be home tonight.

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.
I was scrolling through news ---- I don't watch it, I read it, to avoid triggers ---- I nonetheless saw.... And had a scream-down-the-house nightmare last night.
So I understand the fact that a trigger sometimes just.... Drops on us like that. I hope your son's foot heals, and that you can give yourself permission to fall apart. It's not a bad break ---- so fall apart, okay? Not doing that hurts wrse in the long run, is my experience, at least.

At least I currently have a month off from school, so my performance there didn't suffer from this incident.
I rarely even scroll the news, too much going on, and you'll almost always see something about cancer. Besides, my ex-husband is rabid about news and makes it a point to keep me updated on anything relevant. LOL And I keep him updated on the more mundane things in life. It works in our friendship.
kudos on being able hold it together for your grandson, buttttttaaaa. . . the volcano's gotta blow, sooner or later. in my own herstory of being strong for others, sooner is better than later. the longer i wait, the more detritus there is to vent along with the original emotions. repressing carries a high price.
steadying support while you process. . . i am thrilled to hear you have a month off from school.
Triggers can feel like an apocalypse waiting to happen. They are the pay attention to me now feelings.
Like you, I prefer to read the news because it leaves out emotionally charged words (most of the time). I hate the news. It's not informative.
It is okay to feel what you are feeling.
Triggers are real and they do affect you in a bad way. What you described is strong but I love that the person is resilient, they get it back together like how you described what happened to you. I totally dislike the word cancer because I had lost many friends because of it and a family member was told they had it but now the doctors are not talking about them having cancer anymore.
When I heard that word again, I felt as confused and angry as I did when I first heard the news. My life had changed in a terrible way since. I am glad your son is coming home from the hospital and I hope life for you and his family returns back to normal.
