Song helps me keep it together
mujicaptsd
In response to some of the pain expressed by us on DS PTSD these days, I figured I would fess up to something that helps me a little with mine. I keep my guitar handy by my couch, and when PTSD overwhelms me, I play this song on the guitar and sing along.
Of course, there's therapy and support group and reading recommended books on PTSD and meditation and prayer, and hanging in there when you just want it to end. All of those things, too. I'm not saying this little pop song saves me. I'm just saying that for me, whatever works is appreciated, and playing this little song is a little something for me. Hope it helps someone else a little with panic and pain, too. The lines "I can't hold out forever/even walls all down" are special to me. They helped me get to acceptance when I had to be hospitalized during my loss of a job and my divorce back in 2000 and I had a lot of shame about it all.
Anybody else have a song that's special to them for their PTSD, too?

"Walls" Tom Petty
Some days are diamonds
Some days are rocks
Some doors are open
Some roads are blocked
Sundowns are golden
Then fade away
But if I never do nothing
I'm coming back some day, 'cause
[Chorus:]
You got a heart so big
It could crush this town
And I can't hold out forever
Even walls fall down
All around your island
There's a barricade
That keeps out the danger
That holds in the pain
Sometimes you're happy
Sometimes you cry
Half of me is ocean
Half of me is sky, but
[Chorus]
Some things are over
Some things go on
Part of me you carry
Part of me is gone, but
[Chorus]
[Chorus]

The song is a bit too masculine for my guitar, but I especially like
Days up and down they come
Like rain on a Congo drum
Forget most, remember some
But don't turn none away
I'll miss the system here
The bottom's low and the treble's clear
But it don't pay to think too much
On the things you leave behind
To live is to fly
Both low and high
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes
This is called Upwards Over The Mountain

Then a smack knocks me to my knees again, harder than any hit I took before. That's a lot considering the damage they did.

I've been enjoying the sounds of late Spring here. There's a tree outside my window and the birds sing to me in the morning.
That's just WILD. I woke up with Jackson Browne's song "The Pretender" running thu my head. My undergrad college roomie's coming for a visit tomorrow, and I'm so old that the song was a hit back then on the radio. We played it on the stereo in our dorm room non-stop, along with Running on Empty when it came out next. On the eve of my old roomie's visit my mental jukebox went back to those days.
So are we a case of great minds thinking alike? Ha!

When I am in the seat of sorrow's grasp, here is one I listen to...
It touches me in a way many cannot and the death of this amazing man so tragically brought by death's calling also increases the depth of this piece...

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
"Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?,
I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season"
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize,
Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason
'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe
May he turned 21 on the base at Fort Bliss
"Just a day" he said down to the flask in his fist,
"Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year."
Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while,
But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him. Maybe I'll just sing about it.
Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button, boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe
There's a light at each end of this tunnel,
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you'd only try turning around.
2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me,
Threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them, however you want to
But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
and breathe, just breathe
woah breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe.
