I find it difficult most times to maintain my own health and wellness. My boyfriend has PTSD (Iraqi Freedom Veteran, Marines). He tends to restrict me from a lot of activities. Mind you we have a long distance relationship, so that alone is a challenge. One example would be when I wanted to go out and get tacos with a girlfriend. He did not like this as he knew the place my friend and I would be going to and he had this belief that a guy was going to hit on me and I would then leave him. No matter how much I tried to tell him that I would never leave him and he is the only one I will ever love, he continued to believe that situation would happen. There was no getting around it. He then proceeded to break up with me, saying he just can't trust me, even though I have never done anything to make him think otherwise. This happens often, I even quit the gym to make him feel more at ease, but he stills manages to find something wrong with my activities. I do not go out on the weekends, most are spent wtih him or my family. I do not mind this, but sometimes I want some time to do things that I used to do and enjoy. Not necessaryly go out and party, but be able to go to the beach or grab a drink with a friend.
I consider myself to be very secure, but I have found it most challenging in dealing with his outburst. Most of the time when he tells me he needs his space, he will tell me that I am annoying, he will try to break up with me, or say other mean and hurtful things. All the sudden he will start to question my loyaltiy and say "it just isn't working." Once I leave, all of that seems to go away and he is okay again. Wanting to be with me. This can get confusing and I then begin to question the security within our relationship.
I was in counseling for a bit, but it got too expensive. I have been trying to convince him to go, but he keeps finding excuses. The only thing I can do is keep trying. Anyway, just looking to vent.
Thank you all again!! Your support is greatly appreciated.

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

We're very lovable people, those of us with PTSD, but just as there is Alanon to support family and friends of people in AA, I can imagine how it might help to have support to be happy in a relationship with those of us with PTSD. We ourselves probably can't tell you all you need to know because we're always learning about our own PTSD ourselves. Maybe that kind of support group Lilly mentioned would be helpful.
Love and trust have to go both ways, and it may be that in trying to control you, he thinks he can control everythingin his life so he is "safe". That's not how it works--- so I think if he is not in counseling, he is quite possibly not a safe partner, even long-distance. Our insecurities, paranoias, phobias, etc., are hard enough for *us* to live with---- if my hubby didn't go to counseling with me once a week, I don't know if we'd be okay at all, but b/c we do, it's a huge help for us both. Keeps us communicating and keeps him in the loop on how PTSD works.
Good luck and blessings,
Leo
Alanon and Naranon are the two places where I found my best, face-to-face support for issues like what you describe.
But...
Venting, too, is quite valuable. Hope it helped. Gentle support while you sort what is right for you.
