Recent trauma and professor problem
Hi, I'm in my 40's. I went back to college to be a teacher, and have done well in classes. I'm having a problem with one assignment .. I suffer with anxiety and major depressive disorder, which has been well controlled after getting the right medication. Things were finally moving forward quite well; it was a big step to finally be able to have my anxiety controlled enough to handle college. I've been able to maintain a high GPA even. Things had gotten significantly better.
But, the last few months have been challenging. My mom was diagnosed and started treatment for breast cancer (luckily it was detected early). My dad (really step-dad, but he's been there since I was 4) also got very ill at that time. He went into congestive heart failure, luckily, it was reversible, but he's had a lot of issues breathing, swelling joints, that the doctors haven't figured out yet and it's been since October 2017. During all the scans, they found a mass on his kidney. He recently had surgery to remove it and part of his kidney. The doc said 90% of the time it's cancer, but again luckily, we just found out it wasn't cancer just a cyst. He's been doing better recently, but still has some issues and was sent to a new specialist; we're awaiting further testing.
My mom had surgery to remove the cancer. A month ago her elbow swelled and a pocket of fluid gathered, so her doctor drained it with a needle. A month later, my mom's arm swelled suddenly and she went to her doctor. She was in sepsis shock, and was admitted immediately into the ICU, hanging on for life. Her blood pressure dropped very low and they said her kidneys were damaged from sepsis. They took her to surgery for her elbow and cut a giant hole in it and cleaned out a bunch of tissue. It has been left open to drain the infection. Sepsis causes tiny blood clots throughout the body, which cut off oxygen to organs and tissue. Many people don't survive sepsis and those who do often have long term effects. She's been having severe pain in both arms and numbness in her hands, which worries me considerably. It all has been quite shocking and extremely worrisome. I'm not sleeping well and have nightmares. I'm very close with my mom. She's been healthy until recently and is in her 50's. This all happened so suddenly. She's home now, but has a lot of pain in her arms and her hands are numb.. She's also getting radiation treatment every day; it's been a lot...
I apologize this is so long. On top of this, I'm having a problem with a college assignment that ironically comes at a very bad time. The assignment is to make a video about my childhood that will be played in class. I haven't been able to handle making a video about her with photos set to sentimental music. I started having severe panic attacks and sob every time I sit down to do it. I'm having a feeling like death. I can't explain it, but it's horrifying like empty, black void of being alone and I don't know what to do with myself. I haven't been able to complete it and the thought of it being played during class. I'm afraid I'll break down in front of the class sobbing. We've been told before by this professor that no matter what's going on in our personal life, we have to put on a happy face in the classroom, so me crying may be a problem.
I went to speak with my professor to let her know what was going on. I left feeling minimized. I was hoping to be given an alternative assignment, but I still have to do it. It was a stressful conversation, she was dismissive and cavalier saying things that were insensitive. She never said, I'm sorry to hear that and I hope your mom gets better soon. I'm not sure how to deal with this..doing the assignment under the circumstances is causing a lot of emotional distress and is causing me to have trauma related symptoms; it's triggering extreme anxiety.. I don't know what to do! Thank for reading all this!

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...
But besides that, I still wonder at the purpose of this assignment.
Good luck and my prayers to you and your family.
More importantly, continue to be there for your parents. They are truly lucky to have you in their lives. I wish full and speedy recoveries for both.
I helped him get to the college counselor and then get a medical withdrawal from his classes to his grades wouldn't suffer and damage his transcript records permanently while he recovered from his grief. He can come back to school in the Fall.
That's the way it's supposed to go at school with a family crisis, and if the professor didn't get that, going to the dean is appropriate.
No, I wouldn't attempt another talk with the profie again, nor would I attempt to work the chain of command on it. I don't hide my condition, but I am a bit choosy on who gets to rifle through my psychobaggage car. It's disorganized enough, already.
I shoot for letting class assignments be career choice simple. If I can't complete a video presentation assignment, Talk Show Host, etc., is not the career choice for me.
I have also taken "Incomplete" options where I was able to finish the course work and change the grade in the following semester. The danger spot with that one is that an "Incomplete" would have changed to "Failure" if I had not completed the coursework. An "F" sure can damage a GPA.
And of course the wording for that changes from one institution to the next. It might not even make sense at your college. Sigh. . . Like we weren't confused enough, already?
Welcome aboard, Jenessence. Hope you find healing companionship here.
Keep venting. Your answers are in there.
Both of my parents were very ill at the same time and I know I couldn't have managed school then at all!!
It's a terrible time and I am so sorry that you're going through it
I agree to speak to the dean..... I think that this teacher is being really unreasonable....... Put on a happy face,,,, what a load of caca
Another hug and a blessing..... I hope that your parents health improves......xo
Do you think your parents might be cheered up by hearing about your project and maybe talking to you about picture choice and stuff, just reminiscing about good times all together can be healing for them and maybe help you not feel so emotional about it when it is played in class because it won't just be about them, because they will have contributed to the project as well as you so it would be a successful moment for team Jen's family.
It is just a thought, because I realize your parents are sick and this may not be possible.
triple hugs of support~
This professor is one of my main professors in my major. She'll be doing formal evaluations on me starting this semester that could effect my progress in the program. So, it's a delicate situation that I don't know what to do about other than maybe go through the pain making the movie and humiliation of crying in class when I present my movie.
There was also an incident a couple weeks before this happened with the same professor that I don't know how to take. We had to do a creative product of our choice (painting, musical piece, short story, etc.) and share it in class. I wrote a short story. After I read it in class, she asked me if I wrote it. I said yes, it's based on an experience I had. She said it sounded like it came out of a book, but then looked away to write notes on her paper and mumbled something like it was good enough to be a book; I can't remember her exact words. This was the week before my mom got sick, and that incident had been on my mind. I wondered if she thought I plagiarized it, and hoped she would check into it, if so, but she didn't collect our work.
This whole thing is so strange.
Right now, I don't feel it's appropriate to ask my mom and dad to reminiscence about the past. We all need to be in the now and focus on what's needed to help her recover as much as possible (which I hope is as close to normal as possible). It's still so early. This just happened and is a sudden change that we're still not sure what the end result of recovery will be. She needs to stay positive and looking back over her life (like doing a life review) is often something people do when they're at the end of life. My mom hasn't been doing that on her own, so it might be painful for her, and I don't want to do anything that could potentially cause her emotional distress and cause her to spiral into depression. I thought maybe I could by now, but I don't feel right about it, so I may have to use fake photos... I just don't know what to do; it's all causing so much anxiety, I feel paralyzed, like I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't. If I go to the dean, it may cause more problems. If I don't and cry during class, she may hold that against me on my formal disposition evaluation (our emotional and moral character statements by professors throughout the program) that goes on our permanent college record and is sent to the state when I apply for my teaching license. There's no good solution to this.
Just getting to college when things are difficult takes a lot of willpower for me also. Some days the anxiety is too much and I throw up before I go. And, I can completely relate to being in a fog! In the last couple weeks, I've lost my books, lost my wallet, and forget needed things for class. I've been on autopilot. We have way too much to do for classes; so many of my classmates talk about the ridiculous workload. I've never seen anything like it. Many people don't go on to advanced classes, they get their associate and stop because of how demanding the program is. It's a lot when things are going smoothly in life!
I don't know the answer either! It's complicated with the professor being one of the main ones with a lot of authority over me. I feel damned if I do and damned if I don't. I decided to look into seeing the mental health counselor at my college, but the few hours she's on campus a week conflicts with my schedule. I'm going to call tomorrow and see if there's an alternative time I can go see her. But, when you're dealing with a lot in your personal life and a full load of classes and you're barely hanging on, adding another appointment or two is a lot, especially when it's a 50 minute drive one-way. I'm so exhausted and jittery all the time!
