Can a person have PTSD from having had life threatening cancer???? I have had cancer twice. The first cancer was scary but not life threatening. The second cancer could very well have taken my life had it not been found so early. I had gone to the ER with severe back pain. I went alone. After a long night of tests they told me my appendix was rupturing and then took me in to surgery. When i woke up from surgery i was told that there was a tumor that had ruptured out of my appendix and had spit tumors all over my abdomen. This was about 17 months after the first cancer. So a month after the appendix cancer diagnosis i had a major surgery where they did a hysterectomy (ovaries and all--i was only 34 and had no kids...), they also removed part of my colon and cleaned out the tumor they could find. It was a 7 hour surgery that left me with 50 staples up and down my abdomen. Then six mos later i had another surgery where they circulated heated up chemo and cycled it thru my abdominal cavity for two hours and removed my omentum plus looked through my abdomen for any new tumor. I was once again chopped in almost half. So there's my health history...my question is could this experience have caused PTSD? I have had sooooo many er visits due to pain and blind fear that there is something very sinister brewing in my broken body. Idon't know why i keep going there. Could this be due to Ptsd??;&

And please feel free to hang out, ask questions or just wonder "out loud."
Whatever name you call it by, hope you continue healing.
But do yourself a favor and discuss it with your doc. Getting treatment with a trauma specialist is definitely helpful if your trauma did that number on your nervous system.
Personally I dread hospitals and medical procedures now..
Oncologist will refer for counseling if you want it.
It seems symptom management is the most important aspect rather than the diagnostic label. If you are suffering psychologically let your care givers know and ask if treatment or meds can be fine tuned.
Regarding time - PTSD is the gift that keeps on giving - it rewires nervous system reactions so rarely get "cured" we need to learn all we can about managing.
If you want relief, I'd tell a therapist and describe in detail your symptoms.
I'd also join a cancer suvivors' support group. I think what you are going through is very specific. Your issues are very different from some of us who were abused as kids and all that stuff.
You're welcome to be here, though!
And I'm glad you're well enough to be typing your story. : )
