ptsd in the aging population
cyndybl
I am a retired pschotherapst and a recovering PTSD surivor. As I experience the aging experience I am also experiencing PTSD issues. I believe the aging process triggers PTSD symptoms . Vulnerbility is the culpret. We are somewhat physically impaired and become more dependent on other to meet our challanges that come with the aging process.

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Isn't nostalgia a traditionally respected piece aging? In many (most?) cultures, the elders are the keepers of the history, etc. Some grandparents tell better stories than others, but they all have stories to tell and many (most?) feel compelling needs to tell them. I certainly do.
In my own long, hard road from throw-away kid to comfortable retiree, I have grown convinced that the difference between "nostalgia" and "dwelling on the past"/flashbacks is reception. Both my audience and I revel in nostalgic stories of life in the last millennium. My father selling children to random barroom pervs. . . Not so much. Don't dwell on the past. The hell of it is, how do I comfortably tell the tales of life in the age of freedom without triggering into flashback hell over the traumatic parts? It is a thorough work-out and reckoning of how well I have made my peace with those traumatic parts. It is possible I work my therapy toolbox harder while I tell stories to my grandchildren than I did while I was still cute enough to attract barroom pervs.
Hope I didn't get too rambly on this response. Whatever the evers of the whats, PTSD and aging is significant in my life and I have yet to achieve simplicity within the phenom. I'll let you speak for the general population.
Forgive the ramble. Welcome aboard.
If you have had loads of help that worked and your ptsd is worsening with age, then keep posting as sharing gets us through.
I know what it's like to feel dependent on others and I didn't like it either :(
Maybe you can plan ahead so you know you'll have good support in place and this will reduce the fear some
We tend to come from cultures where independence is highly valued, I bet in cultures where they depend on others through out life it's not as worrying. Maybe a change in perspective could help?
Hear to listen, even if I don't know the answer
((hugs))
