Just had to vent. Today I went to my 2nd of 3 doctor's appointments 3 days in a row this week. I avoided missing any classes I teach at the community college by bunching them together this week. They all have to do with my chronic kidney disease, which is the reason I had to go off PTSD meds after being on them since 1995.
So no meds, and I have these doctors poking me. Plus, I'm late stage 3 out of 5 with kidney disease, and 5 is fatal. It's chronic, so that means it's incurable. So doctor's visits bring on stress.
Yesterday's doc visit was a piece of cake, despite the invasiveness of it that triggered my PTSD.
Today's visit was a BEAR. Huge medical center an hour and a half away. Had to go to doctor on this floor, labs on the other floor up and down all day long, hobbling around on my cane. Meanwhile, got a parking ticket.
But the result was good: I don't have hepatitis, and my chronic kidney disease has gotten no worse. Once again, for the next 6 months, I don't have to do DIALYSIS. I'm so glad.
Tomorrow, another doctor's appointment. But I made it this far, so...

My assumption has been that doctor visit are so painful because of social anxiety. It never occurred to me that ptsd could be part of the mix.
So proud of you!

One thing I learned in therapy that really helps with all the stress of doctors appointments is to visualize the appointment before it takes place. You won't always know exactly what's going to go on, but you can still guess. I imagine going in, checking in successfully and sitting down in the waiting room, then being called back to see my doctors. I try to imagine my doctor giving me good news, every time, I always imagine hearing positive results. Should the results be less than great, I deal with it afterwards, but beforehand I go in optimistic and positive. If it happens to be an appointment where things will be done that are more invasive, I try to imagine the best case scenario, that there will be no pain or less pain, that it will be finished quickly, that it will go by smoothly without any complications.
Like you said, you've made it this far, you can keep going, you've got this! You will be in my thoughts tomorrow for your final appointment, sending positive vibes and well wishes your way.
May your neuropathy tire of being inside you, and ... when it beats a hasty retreat ... may it leave restored/improved kidney function in its place ;-)

anyway I was totally floored in that I was sitting waiting in the room for the doctor to walk in and I stayed grounded, and *stayed* grounded for the very first time just by focusing on something in the room, just looking around at this and that. (tongue depressors...etc.) in the room. I also did breathing technique as I tend to hyperventilate a lot from anxiety.
So that is how I stayed grounded for the first time. It was such an odd feeling, but wonderful at the same time. I am so use to going to see doctors, at least 2 a week over the last couple years or so... but now it is not as often. I know it is difficult being *touched/probed* and also prodded by doctors. ((((gentlest hugs)))) of comfort for today Muji. I'll keep you in my prayers for a great outcome hopefully. ~Giz
