Does anyone else have pseudo-seizures due to ptsd? I've had these episodes for almost ten years. They look like grand Mal seizures but without seizure activity in the brain. I have them when I'm highly stressed like when a difficult topic comes up in therapy, or a flashback. They start as a panic attack but then I stare off and start tipping over, then I start shaking uncontrollably. It's not as bad as it used to be but it makes working thru stuff in therapy almost impossible.

I don't really know how to label this but I having a rough week and I can't say it's one thing.... I have a lot on my plate which is nothing new and I try to cope in many positive ways and do but I still have my moments. My kids more so my daughters talk to me about everything which I know it's cause of comfort and we are close.... however I really struggle with the venting about their dad which...

I often tremble mightily as I begin to dissociate, but I don't know that they would qualify as seizures. I find my own relief from the symptom by addressing the panic attack, before it escalates to dissociation.
i have been put on seizure preventing medication though...
the neurologist i've been seeing for many yrs has been not the best.
i don't, many people, many many many people don't like the name(s) they call non epileptic seizures - but anyway.
please know you are not alone with this ((((((gentle hugs)))))
whatever is causing them, and being triggered is a very likely cause, seizure medication can help a lot.
what has helped me the most? has been physical separation and every other sort of space away from the people who cause me stress that way.
also, positive support. in ways like - coming here. here is awesome.
getting support here.
venting here.
using a journal here, on private - only for you
friends only - so you can get feedback from people you trust
talking to the group as you feel ready to do that or just to get stuff out - it helps a lot
talking w/ a therapist if you are not already doing that - big help, especially a specialist w/ptsd or trauma trained
a dr who can prescribe anxiety meds - big help/possibly other meds to help you not have to deal w/as much at first
we are with you now, you are not alone w/this xo
i've had everything from absense seizures to the big ones

i like that the meds help and help w/sleep too - that is a nice bonus.
i am going to try acupuncture and a new neuro xo
here for you xo
they are seizures, no matter what is causing them. it so annoys me that they treat, some drs treat as if you are not having seizures - because we are. we are having seizures.
at any rate, seizure medication does work to stop us having them and even better, therapy. ptsd medication, anti-anxiety medication - and the best of all - removal of the people causing the stress.
i am also wanting to learn better ways of dealing with stress - that';s an excellent thing to do for ourselves.
once we've reached the point of having seizures though, it is time to step away as much as possible.
huge hugs xo
The main type of testing right now is actually Inpatient Hospital stay for several days for Video monitoring on the Epilepsy Ward.
And I can tell you as someone who has the other kind of Seizure Disorder, Grand Mal Seizures, because my brains electrical system does misfire....hanging out on the Epilepsy Ward for a week having your every move video taped is a whole different kind of...ummm, boredom! I have to do it twice a year.
The main line of Research and Thinking on Psychogenic Seizures from PTSD is,
For some patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, the seizures are a manifestation of trauma, which is also known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In order to treat patients with PTSD, the clinician has to take the seizure apart to see what the seizure represents in terms of emotions and memory as well as where this trauma is stored in the body,”
When a person experiences trauma (such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, witness to violence), his or her body can absorb this trauma. Therefore, a seizure is the body’s way of expressing what the mind and mouth can not. What has been found to be the most effective treatment for PNES is a therapeutic technique called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Have you talked to your Dr. about doing EMDR? Its used quite a lot for PTSD actually.
thanks for sharing about that, older.
