I went to bed around midnight. I was perfectly fine. I had just talked to a good friend, worked on my writing some, watched a funny TV show and laid down. Around 3 in the morning I wake up to find myself with my face laying in a pile of broken glass, and im bleeding. Ive ripped out chunks of my hair and have scratches down my chest. Apparently the picture frame on my nightstand fell off and broke. During my night terror I somehow managed to slice my forhead wide open. I drove myself to the hospital and the doctors glued my forehead shut and sent me home. Typically after a night terror I cry and panic so bad. This time, I just cleaned up and went straight to the hospital. It wasnt until I was driving home that I started balling and panicking. I had to pull over cause my chest hurt so bad. I think what hurts the most is that I have absoutly no control over these. I could have the most perfect day ever, and still have one. There are no triggers needed or signs to warn me about them. I feel so powerless and out of control. Walking into the ER is one of the most horrifying times for me. Mostly, because I go alone. I have no one I could call at 3 in the morning to calm me down. I have no one who would hold my hand and comfort me through the night terrors. Im fighting this battle with my brain, and I have no way to defend myself. I just am left to clean up the glass after its over. During previous night terrors, I have given myself concussions, bald spots, bruised my face, elbows, knees. I have scratched my chest and neck and at one point even had to wear gloves to bed every night. This is a constant losing battle.

I have never had an official service dog, but my support dogs have been such naturals at doing support work that I really don't understand the need to officiate. They are especially good for night terrors. But. . . Even the most impersonally trained of dogs are needy critters. A set up that makes them a welcome part of your world is essential.
There is more than one way around the conundrum of night terrors. Gentle support while you find yours, Dareb. Welcome to the forum.
