Hi, I've been 27 years on the journey of recovery, and feel so well these days with much clarity of mind. I'm off most of my psych drugs. Still on one that helps me sleep.
I've had all sorts of therapy. I always thought I had mental illness, and. on top of that I had the effects of trauma. I'd been diagnosed schizo affective. (One therapist said I had complex PTSD.)
No one is more amazed than myself that I got to be as well as things are now.(there's still a few issues) It seems in retrospect that my mental illness WAS all the effects of trauma and abuse.
Just wanted to share, to encourage others to hang in there and keep reaching out, for help. I've had some bad experiences in reaching out for help - one VERY bad - but I've also ended up with very good experiences.
Over 20 years ago, my shrink said that the best I could hope for was a 'long term, partial recovery.'
I thought he was totally right.
And here it is, September 2014, and he was wrong!

Yes, often people who have been abused are misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. That's because while you're not crazy, you're responding normally to a crazy situation which can look a little nutty. Therapists sometimes would rather believe that the child is mentally ill rather than believe they could be that badly abused.
People with MPD are often misdiagnosed with schizophrenia as well.
If there has been abuse or trauma, the response often looks "crazy" so people are diagnosed with a long list of "mental" illnesses when all that's happening is a normal reaction to craziness.
We are strong and smart. It's about relearning things and not defining ourselves as "sick."
They're learning. It's sad that this level of trauma happened to us. But it's great that we hung in there when there was no hope and we're the survivors who taught them there's more hope than they believed. HURRAY!
Hugs.
