My wandering urges are whelming again. Big surprise, huh? A pivotal question in my 40+ years of therapy is whether I am wandering to something or from something. Well. . . As a hyper-active teen, I was at a flat out run. I didn't run in a mode calm enough to accomplish wandering. I didn't have a variable speed then. "On" and "Off" were the only settings on my energy switch. In my calmest mode, I could outrun just about anything on the planet, through hook or crook. I had plenty to run from. . . The compassionate folk of the world were holding gates open for me while the wicked were looking for ways to harness that energy for their personal power grids. My Queen of Mosey Crown was hard earned. Learning to slow down was no small feat for me. Menopause gave me a whole new set of tools to work with. Variable speed motors!!! What a concept!!!
I was in my first semester in college ('76) when the question first arose, "Are you running to something or from something?" After I finished my Army tour, I allowed my birth family to talk me into enrolling in a college in the area they had moved to while I was in Europe. By their logics, if I was rich enough to pay college tuition, I was rich enough to be their lottery ticket, etc., etc. I managed decent grades in that first semester, but I could not see finishing a degree plan with that kind of support. The answer to the initial question was, ". . .running from, but sometimes running from is the best possible option." This would be where the therapy talk shifted to what was being called, "A Therapy Funeral" in 70's pop psychology.
All these decades and changes later, I still work through the initial question, "Am I wandering from something or to something?" whenever my wandering urges hit. In the recent wanders --been day wandering aimlessly most every day lately-- the initial answer is also the same. "I am wandering from something, but sometimes wandering away is the best solution." What I am wandering from is still family. I have dropped the "Therapy Funeral" notion. I am quite sure I want to keep them, warts and all, but I still squirm like a shark on a hook at the thought of playing the traditional family roles. Well. . . I am loving the "Grandma" role when the parental units are not around. So is the grampy of my grams, but. . . the dynamics sure change when the parental units (youngest son and his wife) are at home. Don't wanna be "The Monster-in-Law." Don't wanna be the "Old Wife." Don't wanna be the good "DIL." Not that I make much sense to the family members when I try to speak my "don't wannas." They just want me to fill the expectations which brought them to me this time and get back to my box. Keeping projects on track here at the homestead in between fulfilling their expectations is. . . Not going well. . .
I am not sure if I am sorting or venting. Both, I reckon. . . Blowing off the chaff is always my first step in sorting.
The feet sure are itching. . .

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

But what would I run *to*?
My hubby minor'd in Spanish and he posed this to me yesterday when I was pacing the house begging for a destination other than, well, the house.
A is to
De is from
Para is for
So he asked me what am I running *for*?
And threw my whole equation out of whack completely.
I ran from. I ran to. now he's asking me what I'm running *for*.
My yearning to sprout wings and flee, to be magically healed so I can literally run, is very strong for me, lately, too, Arfie.
So I shall ponder my prepositions, and lend you support as you ponder your ponderables....
My feet itch in summer to the point where I plan to hike north to south rim in the Grand Canyon even though if I manage a whole mile in a day it's a miracle.... minus gear... that's just "around the house" with this bum hip. I start listing what I need to hike the AT from Damascus to Harper's Ferry (over 500 miles)... All the Big Hikes I never got to before my hip injury and now are beyond me, and I itch all the more for htem because they are beyond me now.
No idea if that's helpful, harmful, but I am deep in the Flight mode myself these days....
Gentle vibes,
Leo
I've stayed put in the same job now for 4 years now. I wonder if I'm settling down, living with all of the questions any better. Hope so.
Meanwhile, we sort, don't we?
My entire life up to this point centered around making everyone else's life easy. I did not matter a whit to myself, even though I knew then and I know now that I am and was a good, decent, moral human being.
There were no boundaries when it came doing for others. Nor were there any boundaries when it came to how far I would run myself into the ground for others. I mattered not . I existed to see others happy because I was incapable of feeling happiness. Feeling happiness is something that other people did, not me.
So here I am, I have dealt with and am done with my abuser. My 22 year old son feels it is way too much for him to accept me as one who believes in God because he believes the opposite. We haven't talked in 3 months and may never. My sister is sucking up to my mother simply for money. And my social life is pretty much a zero.
I have plans for dealing with the social thing and I will take care of it. But yes I ran from myself my whole life due to that engrained feeling of worthlessness that child abuse brings you. Now I have no excuses. 52years of feeling a certain way will not get changed overnight. It can only be done one hour, one day at a time. And that is a real SOB when you are used to running your entire life.

Anyhoo. . .
Today's 200 mile wander vented a bit of the wander lust, but . . .
Me wants a navigable river. . . Texas ain't got none. . .
A trip on the river sounds like a plan!!!

It is rich to discover yet another. Can't have too many. Thanks again.
The interest is much larger than just the Mississippi. I call it, "The Mid-continental Hydrology." It is all the sources which feed into the Mississippi River Valley. That is ALLOT of sources, including The Great Lakes.
Then, in my bee barge fantasy, I get Loopy. . . http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/qctimes.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/1/69/1699e59a-8c4f-11de-9188-001cc4c002e0/1699e59a-8c4f-11de-9188-001cc4c002e0.preview-300.jpg Any guesses how many agricultural concerns there are on The Great Loop?
