Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
So I'd have to say yeah, being abused in anyway, shape or form would almost have to play a role in the way we are now.
Gramps tried repeatedly during the 10 yrs he was in our home to molest me overtly. most of it was verbal and emotional with him. he did manage to fondle me when i was 14 or15 and that's the year my daddy put a lock on my bedroom door and the bathroom door. i didn't tell daddy why i wanted these locks..i used the excuse "i'm afraid someone will break in to our house, so i'd feel safer with locking doors".
my first husband was really verbally and emotionally abusive. just a mean SOB. pushed my buttons constantly to see how much i could take before snapping. we have been divorced for 11 yrs.
then, i had a relationship with a man i thought i could trust-wrong!!! he cheated on me multiple times. that just about crushed me. he just up and disappeared one evening.
just got told by my fiance' that my illnesses are "too overwhelming ". meaning, if i have to go back to the hospital, it takes away from HIS fun.
so, now i have huge abandonment issues and am very codependent and also anxious about that next person leaving me.
oh, i forgot to mention that my parents died a month apart....i haven't been the same in any way since. The bf cheating on me was about the last straw for me.
My story can be read in my journal dated sat 31st May and by viewing my current journals
I also have noticed a pattern that normal life for me anyway seems a lot harder then other people who have not experined any abuse. I started that topic a little on my group page borderlinesancturary if anyone is interested in checking it out. Its under my story. Yeah it just seems like there is a lot of correlations between personality disorders and abuse.
I think having a very authorative and domineering mother growing up also contributed to my BPD. I think that had the most profound impact on me to this day.
This whent on for years...until I had enouph...snaped...and then became a mean bitter person. I think thats why I have trouble trusting people.
Most of the time I will hurt people before they get the chance to hurt me.
It's funy...I still remember all of there faces.
I guess I can see a link...but I don't think it coused my PD's. It probably nurtured them though.
