A panic attack is a period of intense fear or discomfort, typically with an abrupt onset and usually lasting no more than thirty minutes. Symptoms include trembling, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation, and sensations of choking or smothering. Panic attacks can be very sudden, appear to be unprovoked, and are often...
I was sent on a virtual run around of doctors and specialists until I was dizzy. My symptoms were an awful sensation of something stuck in the back of my throat and fear of the dark. I was sent to an allergist, dermatologist, ENT and a gastroenterologist. The gastro guy was the worst but actually ended up being a blessing in disguise. After I insisted his little purple pill was not helping and I did not believe I had a gastric problem (much to his dismay!) he basically told me I needed a psychiatrist. So, that’s exactly where I went. Turns out he diagnosed me with GLOBUS Pharyngis. Look it up. Bingo! Then he prescribed Xanax.
I honestly thought I was losing my mind and it was all in my head until he diagnosed me.
My attacks now come only at night but didn’t always. I couldn’t even sit in a dark theater or have a wash cloth over my face in the beginning. Ten years later and I still have bad times but I’ve never had the heart rush, sweat, numbness or palpitations. Mine is more like I want to jump out of my skin or I have this enormously overwhelming sense of doom. Like being buried alive or having complete paralysis but yet being conscious. I feel like it’s not death that scares me but the process of suffering and no way of ending it. I am so conscious that it’s ridiculous but there you have it. Sometimes dealing with it by turning on lights, petting my dog, distracting myself with plans for the next day or looking at FB will help me ride it out. These episodes come when I try to wean myself off my Xanax. Apparently, I need them or I will have to deal with the horror of my terrors. So. Hope this helped somebody. If it helps it’s meds if it doesn’t it’s drugs.
I’d like to think I would never have to take another pill in my life but at 60 I just don’t want to feel all that madness. Old age sucks enough.
