Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
Finding a medication that helps and doesn't cause unbearable side effects is difficult. From my own experience and also from what I have read and what I have been told by professionals, medications work differently on everybody. This is the main reason why it is so difficult to find the right med, and doing so involves a lot of trial and error.
Last year, my psychiatrist ran a test on me to see which medications work best with my body chemistry... these tests involve a mouth swab to test for genetic variations in metabolism of meds. Are you currently seeing a psychiatrist? It might be worth looking into this test. It is not too expensive and may help.
I would definitely suggest trying something else if the Celexa is no longer working. The three antidepressants I have tried were Luvox (terrible side effects for me as well), Prozac (took when I was younger with no issues, but increased my anxiety when I tried it years later) and Zoloft, which I seemed to tolerate well. From my understanding, Luvox, Prozac, and Zoloft are the three main SSRIs prescribed for OCD, but there are others out there as well. I would encourage you to talk with your doctor.
I hope you can get some relief soon!
In the end I actually refused to take any type of drugs... I found that taking a fish oil pill every other day did something for sleep and mood. I'm now trying to find a good fish oil in liquid form. Anyways, best of luck to you!
