I recently started an aqua-aerobics class. I cannot do the exercises to the degree that the instructor does them..but I do my best to lift my arms and legs as much as I can. The class is 45 minutes long....and when we are finsihed I can barely get out of the pool and I have to sit for a good 10 minutes before I can drag myself to the locker room..... Plus I am pretty much shot for the rest of the day. I have only taken 3 classes so far and even when I try not to over exert myself ....I pretty much get the same result (can't get out of the pool, shot for the rest of the day). My question is - am I helping things or hurting things? I will ask my doctor at next visit, but I thought I would see what others have experienced as well. Thanks again for your input!

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...

I just do not feel well and I really think that it's because I cried yesterday on my way to work about my Aunt who is in the hospital. I don't think that we will have her much longer. She is very frail. Now she needs help eating. So, this is the third time in a year that I felt this way after crying. I think crying releases toxins into my body. I also worked up a sweat at the gym...

As to how much is too much, we each are different. I used to walk alot, like 25 miles a week, work on my feet for more than 8 hours a day, and do alot of yoga. So I like the feeling of physcally exerting myself, and being sort of worn out. But I have also found that if I do too much, I am worn out for days. You have to find the right place, but don't give up. Exercise is really good.
Discuss it with the instructor as they are usually good at giving you ideas on how to ease into it.
Dont give up on it, see if there are gentler classes to start with or just do half the class to start with & ease into it.
Hope you continue as it will help in time.
It's really all about our individual progression. I have to have my own goals and if a coach could help, that's great!
Hope I helped some!
The idea to get things going is to push a bit more every day.
Walk 1 mile around the storage lockers an 5 minutes onb excersize bike.
I told my doc I was doing it to show how well I was doing. That I had the ambition to maintain an excersize schedule. The problem is I told her it made me fall asleep so much. I started January doing iy every morning, but I was like a narcoleptic always falling asleep. It started to get me paranoid always falling deeply asleep like that. I'd wake trying to remember what I had been doing what I had been thinking and if there was anything I needed to do. It was making mew paranoid. I scaled back and found I could do it 2 days in a row, if I did it a 3rd day the sleeping started happening. I'm still maintaing my goal, but I only excersize for 2 days then I take a day or two off.
She said I was falling asleep like that because of MS spacity & she asked me if I wanted to start Fampridine(Ampyra) when it came out in march. She said not right away in March because the docs in the clinic do not like to prescribe a new med until it hasd been out for a while. But she thought wit Ampyra, I should be abkle to excversize every day without falling asleep like that.
So yes do mention it to your doc. Ampyra might be targeted to help you also.
I think the excersize is good. The only thing I think it is different for with MS and without. Before I had MS I excersized to build muscles,
with MS I just maintain. Perhaps you can do a half a class, you not building muscle you are maintaining.
How often are the classes? Perhaps decrease the # of times per week.
SInce the problems started with my leg, I'm battling with how much I can do at each session and how often I can play. I'm down to two sessions a week and taking it easy in these sessions.
But it keeps me happy to be playing (even though I have bad days afterwards). Keep going while you can, but remember to talk to the people running the classes (as discussed above). If they're worth their salt they'll either know how you can modify their class, or they'll go away and come back with suggestions for you. Don't be afraid to ask them to do that. If they want a good reputation, they'll help. Nothing worse than a reputation as a trainer who won't help?
Good luck and keep going, at a steady pace.
