Hi This is Rose from California. I have had MS for 35 years. I had two episodes of optic neuritis 20 years ago about 3 years apart. I was at work trying to read a document and it looked like someone had taken an eraser and swiped it back and forth across the page. It was frightening. I went to an optometrist immediately and got the diagnosis. There was no pain involved. He told me my sight may or may not fully return. He prescribed prednisone as I recall and the vision returned after a few weeks. Both times it happened I was working in a very stress work environment which may have been the trigger. I had it in 1982 for about 3 weeks but I will never forget. It was when computers were first being used. I did not know I had MS for another 16 years. I thought it was from starring at a computer. My right eye was having problems from the computer and kept getting worse and worse so that I only had peripheral vision but could not see straight on. The problem started with my left eye and I was convinced that it was from a computer. I quit my job and went to see an eye doctor. He said it would go away in about 3-6 weeks. At that time, there was no MS therapy so they didn't tell you had MS. So I went home and stayed inside in the dark because light hurt my eyes. After taking it easy for about a month, I went back to work but not on a computer. My vision returned 100%. Once in a while, my right eyeball hurt if I was sick but that was about it. My neurologist says that he can see the scar tissue in my eyes from the optic neuritis. A lot of people get all their vision back. It only happened once. Once the flat screen computers came into play I could work on a computer but the old cathode ray tube really bothered me along with fluorescent tube lighting.

Ezone, so glad you forged on after the optic neuritis and were able to continue working after a short reprieve to recover. I've also heard that with a lot of MS cases, they start with the optic neuritis and it is only temporary. My mom experienced ON circa 1976 but was never diagnosed with MS. Oddly, The first house I lived in with my parents was purchased by a woman who ended up moving to Florida and having MS. Of course, I was dx'd in 2003, and my Mom has had strange symptoms since the 70's, I have to wonder if there was something up with that home, or that part of town, I don't know Erin Brockovich, so may never know.
