Insomnia Support Group
Insomnia is a symptom, rather than a disease, and is characterized by inadequate quantity or quality of sleep. People with insomnia complain of difficulty falling or staying asleep, which results in significant impairment of daytime functioning. Insomnia is categorized as transient (shorter than one week), short-term (one to three weeks) or chronic (longer than three...
I have Alteril, Somnapure and Valerian Root Standardized but don't know if I am only allowed to take them for a few nights or I can continue to take one of them every night before I go to bed (or maybe one Somnapure or Alteril with one Valerian standardized) on a continuing basis.
I notice some posts from people saying they've been taking Alteril or Somnapure or Valerian Root (standardized) every night for years. Individually or sometimes mixing 2 Alteril with one Valerian Root (standardized), etc.
Somnapure even prints on it's info sheet "It's important to take Somnapure every night for the natural ingredients in Somnapure to help your body readjust to it's natural Circadian rhythms. The longer you take Somnapure, the more it can help you get the sound sleep you need."
Has anyone been taking either of these three sleep aids for years?
I would rather be taking this natural product for a long time rather than a prescription sleeping aid, which has many side effects.
I am senior male.
Some posts said:
"I take Valerian with Dual-Action Melatonin each night. My sleep is usually deep and restful. I would recommend it; I consider it very beneficial. " "I take every night"
" My doctor recommended Alteril, so I know it doesn't interfere with any prescription drugs I take. Because of my insomnia, I take 2 tablets nightly to help me get to sleep."
"I am so grateful that I found Alteril. I fall asleep faster, sleep sounder and awake refreshed. I have been using Alteril every night for over a year and I will continue to use it. I take it and go to bed within about 15 minutes the tv goes off and I'm out."
"I have been using Somnapure for about a year. What I like about it is; i can take them every night and not have any problem getting up in the morning. They are all natural with no side effects."

Welcome to the Perseid meteor showers, the "biggies" usually every year. (The Leonids beat 'em one year IMHO).AND today much of the northern hemisphere will see 5 to 99% solar eclipse. How cool is that? Your best bet is to be in the UK or norhtern Spain, where totality is excellent before sundown. Me, I'll get a super duper tiny itty bitty slice of it, so little that it won't be noticeable. New...

I'nm exhausted. This doxycycline thing has ripped me apart and I'm eating crackers and water. I can't take (anything) or eat (anything) except saltines and toast and maybe unbuttered watery mashed potatoes. Are we sure the cure isn't worse than the possible disease?!?!And a week to go. ***Fun cures that WERE worse than the disease:ARsenic. Popular against STDs, which just compounded misery...

I'm a 35 y/o female. I suffer from chronic pain and fibromyalgia. Also, I've had sleep disturbances for as long as I can remember.
I've been taking 2 Alterils each night for about 2 yrs. This medicine is great since most OTCs and Rx's don't help me. You don't become immune to it over time if that's what you're worried about. But I also have to keep a strict sleep regimen and healthy sleep hygiene or it won't matter if I take a horse tranquilizer, I'll be up all hours of the night / tossing turning. I usually take Alteril about 30 mins prior to bed. I don't wake up with any hangover or weird side effects.
I hope you find something that helps you.
I wonder if anyone else is using Somnapure or Valerian Root (standardized) every night for long period of time?
(I wish this forum fixed their email notification system so we would be notified when someone answered one of our posts.)
Alteril has a little of melatonin and valerian but those aren't the main ingredients. I think the combination of herbs work pretty well together.
Guess you have never used Somnapure?
A couple of comments. First, the best person to answer this is your doctor. That person has examined you and knows your unique medical history. No one on the internet has done that.
Mixing substances, even OTC ones, can have serious side effects. My suggestion is to beware of any anecdotal information you receive about various herbs and OTC substances, online or anywhere for that matter. What works for one person may not work for another, and may even be dangerous.
Your doctor will be able to give you evidence-based recommendations that are specific for your age, health conditions, and appropriate for any other medicines you may be taking.
That said, I agree with you that an OTC substance may in some cases be better and have less side effects than an Rx sleeping pill. One look at the warnings on some of these Rx substances was enough to scare the bejeebers out of me.
I'd also note that Somnapure contains both valerian and melatonin. So beware if you take separate valerian in addition you are in effect doubling up.
