So just to get the info out there, I do not friend people that I have not have had contact with on the boards..
Have a nice day.
Look it up, play it, enjoy it, share it.
I had lunch with hubby and the friend yesterday, and this is definitely the friend's idea. It seems he wants to work with a less hands-on owner, and eventually have his own restaurant. They're talking about setting things up so he can gradually buy us out. After yesterday, I'm a bit less concerned that our manager might bail on us, given that he'll have a stake in our success. So hopefully, it wouldn't be the kind of workload I'm dreading for hubby.
My main concern with this whole adventure is that our kids wouldn't see much of their father, and me, my husband (along with the possibility that, to put it frankly, he wouldn't know what he was doing and it would drive him crazy). But it sounds like they both feel like they have an interest in making sure he DOESN'T have to get too involved in the day-to-day operations... I don't know.
And for Gods sake do not turn over any spending or check signing/atm withdrawals, etc. to ANYONE even if they have a partial financial stake in the business....Dual Signatures should be a requirement.
Someone who eventually wants to buy you out will want to be doing things their way from the get go. I see red flags all over this venture. Quality time with your husband seems to be the least of your problems right now.
It will take a year to 3 years to get the business making any kind of profit. and if it doesn't do it by then, wash your hands of it.
Maybe he should do a lot of talking to people in the business. People who own high end restaurants. - People who own other ones that are scraping by. What were their dreams when they started? How have things fallen in place or not fallen in place for them?
Numbers on paper always look beautiful and doable.. Reality, not so much when you are being pulled in many directions.
And hell - just dealing with the board of health, getting licensed - getting liquor permits - building permits is all expensive in itself. time consuming and demanding.
You will need lawyers, accountants, designers, permits, staff background checks, and with Obama care, as of 2014 or 15 you better add in health insurance for employees - Oh and if you are serving liquor, your liability ins will be sky high too.
Figure all that into your cost evaluation then ask him if he thinks its' worth it to do this on a whim?
If I were you, I would put my foot down and not let him touch any savings you have right now. Allot a certain amount and DO NOT allow him to delve into any other money.
I guess you see that I do not think this is a good idea for someone not seasoned in the industry.
...
Viv, you make some strong points. I really wonder why our country has gone so anti-capitalism in the last 30-50 years?
Well never mind, I know.
It sounds all gloom and doom from Viv's perspective, but I'm sure it can be rewarding too. I don't think EVERYONE would rob you blind, it's just hard to find the really good ones. And if you do, keeping them is probably a huge challenge. But the headaches one has to overcome with the codes and permits and insurance and personnel....YIKES!
And I do think that almost everyone steals. If its not money, items, or things, it's time, it's slacking..no one will ever have 100% interest in making your company perfect but you.
So I looked up some listings in our area, and while nothing looks promising for our normal market, I did find five VERY cheap places that we could snap up with our cash on hand and a pretty small loan. And they're nice and close together, which fits well with the way we normally do things and the folks I think we might be able to rent to. They're not exactly our normal market, but at the same time, it wouldn't be that big a shift, and just looking at the numbers, I think we could offer them a great value. So I have to make some calls, and depending on what things look like, maybe take a look at these houses. Maybe if I can show hubby something a little closer to his comfort zone that could work out, he won't be as inclined to try something wacky. I have a project ^_^
