my husband did tell me about his vasectomy, but i didn’t expect to get so upset afterwards. It started occurring to me that he should have at least discussed it before he did research, found a doctor, and made an appointment. This is the man who won’t let me do certain photo shoots, but he certainly does whatever he wants when it comes to his body!
I didn’t try to stop him because at the end of the day, it’s probably the right decision. We have two kids, a messed up house, health problems, and debt. We’re in our forties. But I really went through an emotional roller coaster when I realized how very permanent this is.

Tomorrow is my birthday and I will be 68 years old. Age doesn't bother me, really. So the celebration started yesterday with dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, that I actually worked at in the 90s. I went with my brother and our good friend. I ordered shrimp scampi. He had it after I gave birth to our daughter. I had a 6 inch cesarean scar, and was taking care of a 2 year old and infant.
He came home with a list a mile long of things that he wasn't supposed to do, including lift anything over 8 pounds after the surgery. I laughed in his face.
He told the surgeon.
The surgeon told him that the list was a bit on the conservative side, and that yes, he could pick up our toddler (40 pounds) and infant (9 pounds), and drive the next day.
I did give him one day, and shared my ice packs.
(Not that I'm for that. I refused to let it be done on my son.)
You already know that mentally and practically it was 99% the right thing, just take time to let your emotional side to catch up. I think your reaction is quite normal
I have had a vasectomy years ago and I don't remember being told about what I should do or how much I can lift. As for any pain I found it was rather painless.
