I have a friend who experiences some mysterious medical problems. She is also deeply anxious. This leads to her constantly going to ERs. Sometimes multiple times a day. The doctors never find anything wrong and send her home. She also insists that someone must always accompany her to the ER. She is terrified of being alone.
Its to the extent that she never even sleeps alone in her house. She always has to have her partner or a friend over for the entire night. Its caused tension in numerous relationships at this point.
Honestly im starting to feel burnt out. Last time I was staying at her house she came out at 2am demanding that I come to the er with her. I was in the middle of a timed job assessment and told her I couldn't drop what I was doing. I'd also gone to the er with her at least once already that week. I was honestly a little burnt out. She go very upset, raised her voice and started guilt tripping me until I gave in. Then tonight she got very visibly upset that I couldn't stay the night because my dog is actively dying and I want to be home with her.
She told me that she doesnt feel supported, even though I sat and listened to her vent about her week and went shopping with her earlier today. I just feel like she is endlessly needy and overly dependent and its exhausting. Every time I say no or set a boundary she makes me feel like an awful friend.

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...
It is common for people with severe anxiety to think they have medical problems but no doctors can find anything (health anxiety/hypochondria).
And they also don't want to be left alone. She probably calls you in a panic, right? If she is alone?
The doctors can't find anything, because it is a mental health condition. Not a physical health condition, like a broken leg or something.
To me, this sounds all like severe anxiety. Something that she can get treated for. With therapy, and possibly medications. But a psychiatrist would have to diagnose this.
If it were me, I would help her to make an appointment with a psychiatrist (that's a medical doctor, so maybe she will agree to go?) and talk to the doctor about these symptoms and see what the doctor suggests. Assure her that there IS help out there, but that she will need to speak to a psychiatrist to help her to feel better.
All you can do is suggest, maybe offer to take her to the doctor..
But if she won't go, then please set boundaries and take care of YOU. It can be draining and frustrating for you.... it can be hard on friends and family to understand what the person is going through, or how to help them, all the while not feeling guilty.
There's also an Anxiety board on here, if you want to check it out.
Her emotional response doesn't need to be my responsibility.
Has she seen a psychiatrist?
Why is she getting angry if she's been diagnosed with anxiety?
I think boundaries are going to be important and I'd ask her why are you getting angry with doctor's diagnosis when you've gone to them for help??
Big hug...You've been a good friend however continuing to enable won't help either of you
This would be hard...xo
