Hi all,
What would your best advice be for those learning how to effectively communicate to 1) build new relationships be it familial, romantic, etc. and 2) maintain previous relationships?
Any and all responses are welcome!

I think kindness and listening is important..... If we have a good relationship with who we are first then that effects our other relationships in a good way

This is a good topic. I was just thinking today about how I still have to work on cultivating a healthy relationship with myself first. That can be hard and scary because I have to get rid of the internal dialogue or at least keep it at bay. I say this because in order to have a good relationship with someone, you have to be really connected with yourself first. One really cannot change their family members but you do want to have friends that will keep your spirits up instead of down.

I guess being honest about your expectations and boundaries. Listening and not just waiting to react. Being flexible and willing to compromise when necessary. Kindness, patience, and empathy.

Deep eye contact with love. And all of the above:)

This is a book on parenting, but it also is about effective communication. I believe it works with everyone, not just kids. How to Talk so Kids Listen, and Listen So Kids Talk. I admire you for wanting to improve your communication skills. It makes a huge difference in relationships.

Boundaries, first and foremost. Learn how to set them for yourself and you'll have happy relationships all around. Pay special attention to this always but ESPECIALLY if you're a people pleaser.

The first and most important thing you should keep in mind to maintain a healthy relationship is Loyalty. Maintain that and keep your feeling and communication clear to maintain it healthy.

Like other people have said, I think listening is super important, but I also think being caring and emphatic is super helpful for maintaining/ creating relationships. I love when someone remembers something small I told them, like a dentist appointment or something, and later they ask about it.

I like what AdelynRene said about being flexible and willing to compromise when necessary.
