Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Hi there, I am new to this site and this group. I was diagnosed with gastritis last week after the worst 2 weeks of my life and a trip to the ER. The weird thing is I am a super healthy eater, dont smoke, dont drink, dont eat spicy food, 105 lbs, etc. I dont fall into any of the categories "normal" for gastritis. Ive been researching and here is where I need your help...I do take a ton of supplements. Magnesium, omega3, iron, b-12, vitamin D. I read that sometimes supplements can inflame the stomach and cause gastritis. My doc prescribed me prilosec and carafate but I want to know what supplements are safe as well. I am anemic and have low b-12 and vit D levels so thats why I supplement. I also take the magnesium bc it makes me feel so much better. Im scared to take them all now, does anyone have any experience or suggestions? Sorry this was so long I just wanted to be thourough :)

well,i know iron is really hard on the stomach.I was anemic for years and at one point took 3 pills a day.But if your anemic you need the pills and dont have much choice.they used to make an iron pill that was a little easier on the stomach.Maybe ask your dr if there is one that is better than another?

Hi, you can get iron in liquid form. Do you take your supps with food. Never take them on an empty tum - I did and it has cost me. They burn a hole in your stomach. If you take them either with food or directly after it, they are absorbed. I too, eat healthily, no junk, don't smoke, do drink, exercise, loads of water etc and was really fed up to get this; I put it down to alcohol but I have cut that right out and still not healing, and just recently read about supps and how they burn your stomach - and it clicked with me. My hubs used to say - how many of those are your taking - I took so many. Cross with myself but the damage is done.

Gwen, that is exactly what I did. I took the vitamin D and a couple others in the AM on an empty stomach! I did that because I read that the absorption was better first thing in the AM. I guess Im paying for that now :(
Since I got diagnosed I haven't taken any of mine, and Im starting to feel it. I am just so scared to take them since Im in so much pain already from the gastritis. I know it could be worse but this gastritis is one of the worst things to ever happen to me. I hope you are feeling better and over the hump!

You don't want to take prilisec for while life so you will have to figure out the vitamin routine. You probably don't have to take them every day. Some people believe that vitamins aren't needed. I am not anemic but tend to have lower iron levels.

I agree supplements may not be good for gastritis. B12 you need to take if you are on an acid reducer product. You can take the sublingual type that goes under your tongue. Try not to take too many supplements. You can bury them in oatmeal. That tends to work better. Too much fat in the omegas I think.

The longer you have had gastritis, the longer it takes to heal it. Mental health also plays a huge role in the continuation of gastritis. It is a very common cause of it.

This will get better! Keep working at it

Lesley, thanks for your imput, I do take a sublingual b12 but since I am severely anemic I need to take iron everyday. I was diagnosed wth gastritis a month ago and haven't taken an iron pill since. I am starting to get super dizzy and weak (normal anemia symptoms) and don't know what to do. My doctors are completely unhelpful and won't give me a straight answer. I swear as soon as the diagnosed me, they were gone. I am having a flare up now but maybe when it subsides Ill try the iron pill. I swear, if its not one thing its another!
