Hi, I would love to have more time to garden. recently put down some seeds and crossed my fingers. we'll see what if anything pops up. Right now, my big challenge is the lawn! ugh! all danelions. I am told the best grass seed is tall fescue. SO this is what I'll be looking for the next time i'm in the garden center.

Here I am and thanx to whoever invited me to join. My daughter and I just planted a couple flower seeds about a week ago. There is nothing like getting your hands in the earth! It's so wonderful.

I live in Central Florida & am getting back to gardening after a long hiatus. (Stepson thought feeding the bugs was Really Cool.)
I prefer to grow edibles, especially since my 3 year old son will eat anything I pick & hand him. My husband has a "thing" against non-tomato vegetables so I'm starting with edible flowers & perhaps flowering herbs.

I have a smallish shady city lot and it was neglected for a few years. I have some problems - flooding and weeds! But I find that pulling weeds and trimming branches lifts my mood. Also - I don't really know how to explain it, but I find 'artifacts' all over the yard. It started out with bits of glass and now that I am digging around more there is not a day that I don't find shards of glass, bullet casings, old fashioned pop tops, buttons, cobblestones, metal, wires, and even a pair of old sunglasses. Makes it interesting. I have started a collection of the most interesting pieces.

Bobbee- that's really interesting! I never find anything except bugs, worms, and grubs lol

I love to garden and we actually increased the size of our veggie garden this year since it was too crowded last year. Of course it will be crowed again this year, since we are adding more veggies to our list. We also created 2 more beds for me for my flowers, my other beds are just getting too crowded from my other plants spreading. In the garden, I have some of seeds planted, (working on it slowly, due to recouping from surgery) I have some plants planted now too. Waiting next week to buy the rest. There is still a danger of frost for a week or so yet, so I am waiting a little while.

My name is Shelly, I have a small flower garden in a big pot in front of my apartment, its not much, but I love it. I have learned much of my gardening stuff from my parents. I grew up with a vegetable garden as well flowers at my parent's house. I hope someday to have a house of my own for a big yard for JT to play in, and all those beautiful flowers! :) I love daisies the most, as well sunflowers, and many others that I cannot for the life of me know the name of! I live in the country in WV. I have 2 1/2 acres that is lawn, flowers, and garden. I have had flowers, and gardens all my life. I always raise my own tomato plants, I start them indoors, so I am the first one to have tomatoes out of the garden. I have several flower beds. If anyone would like to know any more, please leave a message.

Hello, i started gardening 4yrs ago, when my Nannie passed, cuz i have so many wonderful memories, as a child of being in her garden with her. She taught me everything i know. Unfortunately i only have a small patio, but i do my best. I do my local animals shelter gardening iv been doin it for 3yrs now. I luv watching everything come back to life again bigger & stronger than the year before.
I never tried to grow veggies, just fruit, strawberries, rasberries & blueberries.

We had a very late start here in MN so it's been like a mad dash since the first nice day. We just moved in to the house last fall so we have a totally different gardening arrangement this year since it's a wooded, shady lot. I brought my hibiscus (seen in my avatar, with my gardening cat buddy) with me, I have an orange kind and a pink and white. Last year I had giant sunflowers. I'm not going to be able to do those this summer, but I love sunflowers. I hate to pick favorites, so I also have to give a mention to my giant poppies, so they don't get jealous.
There was pretty much a blank canvas in the front yard, and quite a lot of shade. We moved the hostas that were getting burned because they were in the sunniest spot (Ironic, isn't it?) to a shadier area. At my former residence we planted 3,000 hostas, of every variety, including Bressingham Blue and Avocado. Along the front of the house we also planted rhododendron, and several varieties of peony this spring.
Last weekend we made a trip to the Farmer's Market. St. Paul and Minneapolis both have an excellent farmer's market. We bought enough herbs for our herb garden, and tomato plants for our patio pots, since we're not able to have the vegetable garden this year, we're doing patio pots and flower baskets. I just love having our own tomatoes, they taste so much better than the ones in the store.
Where we removed the hostas, we planted several lilac bushes.
We haven't planted any bulbs yet, but I'd love to get iris, daffodils, and tulips in here for next spring. So that is as far as I've gotten. Our lawn looks pathetic so I think it needs some tlc or some good grass seed that likes it shady. If anyone has grass suggestions ...

I just stumbled across this group and it's great to see other gardeners on DS! I live in the Rocky mountains in the southwest U.S. and have a fairly large area to play (garden) in. My mom always grew flowers, my grandparents were farmers, so mostly vegi's there, but a few flowers in the front yard. I started flower gardening 'in earnest' about 16 years ago when we bought the place we're in now. It was a falling apart shack which we worked on through the winter months. Once spring hit, I just wanted to be outside, so I started carving out a garden. We ended up being on the local garden tour for several years, and I really enjoyed that. Unfortunately, drought hit our area pretty bad for several years and it really did a number on my garden. It's still pretty, but I had to limit how much water I could use (we're on our own well), so many plants had to work hard to just survive and I only put in a few annuals in primary beds so there would be season long color.

I found out that lilacs thrive in the mountains during drought. I have them coming up EVERYWHERE and am constantly working on finding them new homes. lol

This year so far, I've planted nasturtium, larkspur and morning glory seeds. I've done a medium size bed of rocket snapdragons. Added a clematis, scabiosa (pincushion flower), gebera daisies, geraniums, allysum and a bunch of antique viola's/pansy's. That'll probably be it for this year. Sadly.

Hi Melinda, I too have learned a lot from my Mom and love to garden. I live in MN and my name is Wendy. I mostly have maintained a perennial garden (the last 10 years) while planting every year some annuals such as impatiens, zinnias and vinca which I love as the deer don't like vinca and we have had deer problems here from time to time. I love clematis and recently added "Nelly Moser" to the already growing Jackmanni ones. I am glad you like the cat's company! I own an indoor cat. :o)

I love the clematis, too, so pretty!
I just wanted to add an update, we did get the daffodils, irises, tulips transplanted here from our farm property in Southern MN. Down there we have planted a big bed of asparagus, and transplanted peonies, hostas. There are two honeycrisp apple trees, that are in need of some TLC. They've been kind of growing wild, since they were planted about 9 years ago. In our suburban yard, we also planted a few lilac bushes, & got the herb pots done. Whew! great to hear about everyones gardening adventures! I look forward to reading everyone's stories. - Carolyn
