Odd nicknames: Honus Wagner of pro baseball, a legend in his own time, earned the nickanme "Flying Dutchman". Here's where it gets weird. The name's origin is that of a mythical ship doomed to never make port, an omen of nautical doom, and so forth. (Hence its use in Pirates of the Caribbean film) The legend goes back to the 1600s (it's believed, not known). Originally, it was termed the flying (fleeing) Dutchman, meaning it was a Dutch ship that failed to make port before a hurricane/tropical storm on Africa's Cape, and ever since has appeared to warn of bad weather. Capitalizing the F in Flying came later. Other versions say the story originated from an actual Dutch ship, whose captain was notoriously foul-mouthed and/or not-pious-by-standards, and he insisted he could take his ship into harbor despite headwinds and similar. Africa's Cape being rounded meant dealing with Table Mountain and all that convergence of this an dthat, but the point is, the alleged captain swore he'd rather be damned than stop beating against aforementioned winds, the vessel sank, and it is now appropriately doomed to appear and so forth and so on.
The motif of a fleeing (flying, in nautical terms of the day) Dutch ship appears in the OBrien novel series about Captain Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, when a large Dutch ship fleeing them in the novel heels over in a storm and is lost with all hands aboard. Tho' the two ships were enemies, etc., (and yes, the ship goes down off the Cape of Good Hope in the Roaring Forties AKA the stormy as shinola latitudes down there) but the British crew watches in horror. Their lucky shot having damaged the other ship etc., not exactly unexpected, and yet... at sea, it's different. Excellent read, btw, it's the novel in the series titled Desolation Island. (I own all of them.) Set in Napoleonic era wars.
Overt references and re-tellings number in the dozens. Poe had at it, SpongeBOb SquarePants has a Flying Dutchman, you name it.
The Flying Dutchman also became an opera by, no relation to Honus.... Richard Wagner. (Yes, the Ride of the Valkyries guy.)
The phrase "dystopian novel" is used a lot the last 15-20 yeaars, but here's the thing... Dystopia is the opposite of Utopia... But Utopia is Greek for Not-Place or Nowhere, and was used sarcastically by Sir Thomas More for his "perfect" place in his work of that title, b/c More knew no such place could exist in human worlds. So dystopia means bad-nowhere. Yet dis- as a prefix from Latin (hijacked by we Anglophones into any use we can find) actually means "away"/"sundered"/"apart", so this Latin prefix plus Greek root equals... "away-place". Wait, what? See, this is what happens when you look up things....

OK, gotta get ready for... well, chdecking to see if any fleas survived the second pesticide treatment. I found two weak little ones on my white socks yesterday. Squish. The weird thing is, vacuuming is meant to stimulate eggs to hatch so the larva can be affected by the teratogenic (mutation-causing) crap in the pesticide, and make them into fleas without mouths. I feel like the bad mad doctor in an old horror film...
Love ot all, peace upon you,
Leo

Welcome to the Perseid meteor showers, the "biggies" usually every year. (The Leonids beat 'em one year IMHO).AND today much of the northern hemisphere will see 5 to 99% solar eclipse. How cool is that? Your best bet is to be in the UK or norhtern Spain, where totality is excellent before sundown. Me, I'll get a super duper tiny itty bitty slice of it, so little that it won't be noticeable. New...

We're all troubled.WSo, to remind ourselves we're not at rock bottom (this is a reverse optimism thing I learned as a kid):We are not living on the island of Krakatoa when the volcano goes boom!Yeah, okay, that sucks.***Toay in 1942, Pierre Laval announced that the way to free France was for Germany to win WW2. Pierre did not win a lot of friends. When the war ended, quite quickly he was tried...
I seriously need 3 day weekends from now on. It's amazing how that one extra day of rest and to get things done, can help me mentally and physically. I had a doctors appointment yesterday morning, when I got home I got roses and a card for our anniversary. Then he took me to lunch and to Steinmart to shop. I didn't find anything, so we returned home to relax and watch the new show Lethal Weapon. I liked it. Then we got dinner and picked the girls up from moms. I was really dreading our Anniversary and was very depressed, but it turned out relaxing and very nice. He treated me really great yesterday, I wish he could do that all the time and when I have anxiety. There is something about my anxiety that brings the worst out in him.
Today we are cleaning, I have a good friend from high school coming next Saturday to visit. She is a single mom and moved back to Oklahoma this year. She lives about 2 hours away. It will be so nice to see her, but I can't pretend it's not giving me major anxiety and I want to clean everything. LOL. I will just have to get over it, my house will not look perfect.
I'm debating taking the MTX injection tonight. I don't notice any help at this point, and I worry about the bad side effects all of a sudden appearing. My biggest fear is my taste. I have problems with tasting as it is, and I have always heard chemo can cause you to not taste and it can be permanent. My rheumy really wants me to stay on it for my lupus, but I don't know that its worth it.
I pray that everyone has a blessed day. Talk to you later.
Twin, i am so happy you had a good anniversary! You deserve it all and more!
I had a horrible night, barely slept still in bed just about to get up and its almost 11am. Mom is coming at 1130 bringing my dog home, she kept her a few days not wanting me to over do it with my pain. I miss her though so told her could she please bring her home today LOL! Shes my child i feel lost with out her and her snuggles! Feels weird being under orders to do nothing all weekend, i hate feeling lazy! Pain is still very bad and it rained all night so you know what that does, my back and leg are worse than the fibro though. Monday PT is finally the back eval, to figure out what to do for that part too! PTSD still flared, but hoping with the ativan this weekend it eases. I hope everyone low pain weekend and no depression or anxiety! Oh and cooperative husbands!
Sure hope those pesky fleas have finally met their match, Leo. It's ok that you were late...I am just able to get on here now. I remember hearing of the story of the Flying Dutchman, but could not remember the whole story. Interesting.
Twinmom, I'm so glad you had a good anniversary. I pray your hubby keeps treating you that way. I get nervous when people are coming to my house too. Right now, my house is a pit. Is there a way that you could only work 4 days a week from now on? Might be something to check into for your health.
Angela, glad you are getting your pup back. I'm so sorry that you have been so ill and in pain. I'm glad you keep seeing your doctors.
Hubby and I went out with friends for breakfast this morning. They had tales to tell from their trip to California. The guys might go golfing this afternoon if it doesn't rain.
I am coming down with some type of virus. Headache, sore throat, and stuffy head. Not to mention a toothache. I really need to clean the house because I invited out friends over for the Packers game tomorrow after church. The last thing I feel like doing is cleaning.
Hubby told me that he has actually been thinking about moving before I said something. It would be good to live closer to an airport for his travels, and to be closer to his side jobs...and closer to our kids. Living here up north is just not working for us in a lot of ways. The realtors are coming to look at our house on Wednesday morning to see what we could get for it. I pray that goes well. Moving does not thrill me, but it is a bit exciting too.
Later.....
Leo, I hope the fleas ate it this time! I was picturing something similar, you know, with a mad scientist and sci-fi movie lol. Sorry you had a bad fibro night and hope tonight will be better for you.
Twin, I'm soo glad your anniversary turned out well! I was thinking about you yesterday... just hoping and praying he was a good husband to you. And imagining some spacial doorway I could stick my fist through to give him a good knock, should he not be! My husband has 3 day weekends all the time (sometimes he has to come in for a short meeting). The world is unfair, it would be great if that were the standard work schedule for everyone.
Angela, I'm sorry you had a horrible night. Glad your mom is bringing your dog back to you! I hope your PTSD stuff calms down. No fun being all wound up from that. Hugs
Did the bank errands yesterday. The bank up here is really cool. It has a western theme inside. Solid wood everything, thick ropes decorating, wagon wheels everywhere, even the chandeliers are wagon wheels with lantern style lights in a circle on them. I started looking outside to see if there were horses tied up waiting for their cowboys! I made a comment to the lady helping us with the account and she said, "We're a very proud upcountry culture here." Upcountry is where all the cowboy folks live and ranches, etc. Well gee, I feel proud to be a part of this upcountry community now, too! lol
We went grocery shopping a little later, but I had to force myself to go since I felt so yucky. Nauseous, stomach ache, vertigo. But I was out of soup and running out of milk and other things so I felt I didn't have a choice. PLus I wanted to get the rest of the ingredients to finally make that chocolate chip pina colata pound cake I've been dreaming about. When we got to the grocery store my husband loaded up the cart with bags of pasta, jars of sauce, pizza ingredients, and potatoes to make potato wedges. If I'm not cooking (which I haven't been lately), carbs is all this guy eats. Gross. Our grocery bill was something like $130. And he looked at me like I was the guilty one. I didn't grab that much. Plus when I go shopping I usually look for the marked down prices since Hawaii's groceries cost an arm and a leg. Unlike my other half who's like, "Oh yes! Sprouted grains!" grabs 4 bags at $10 each. (facepalm). I don't see what the big deal is since we shop at an organic / non-GMO store so everything on the shelves are healthy. Duh. Strangely, it's cheaper to shop at this store than the normal stores with brand name foods. Ok done rambling.
I've gotta take Silver back in today for his eye ulcer check up. Other than that, I plan on making the pound cake. I really wish I had someone to bake with me and am feeling a bit down about it. I don't like baking alone. I don't think my husband wants anything to do with it. He's going surfing somewhere. It's weird because he has a culinary arts degree (besides his chemistry degree) and says he loves baking but I never see him do it.
Have a blessed Saturday eveyrone
I'm getting sicker by the minute. Now body aches as well as the other stuff. Not sure if I'll be up to having company tomorrow. Plus I'll make everyone sick. I'll see how I feel by tonight.
I got all of the intricate stuff painted on my sign, finally. Now I just need to paint the poly sealer on it, then hubby can put it together. It's really big, and will sit in the corner by our front door to welcome everyone in. Hope it works out at another home, because it's fits our corner here just right.
Angela, Thank you so much! I'm glad you get Abby back today. Hugs to the both of you! I hope your pain and PTSD ease up (and go away).
ida, I'm glad you've had a good day. I hope you aren't getting sick, but it sure sounds like it. I'm so glad that you and your husband are both wanting to move. I'm praying you get good news when they come out this week. I have thought about talking with my boss to see what she thinks and how much I would make if I choose to do that. I spend at least $5,000 on medical every year with me and Addison and then I pay 20% of medical expenses for everything else. Basically, our health problems are killing me financially so that will be the biggest factor for me to consider. Thanks for always looking out for me. I'm glad you got your sign painted.
blue, thanks for the prayers and thinking about me yesterday. :-) It means a lot! I would love 3 day weekends even every other week. :-) Hmmm something to think about. I don't know if my boss would even consider it. I hope you get to make that yummy cake and you aren't too depressed making it alone. Just think your mom will be there soon and maybe she can do some baking with you. Hugs
Well back to cleaning. :-) And then some chocolate for all of my hard work. Geez I'm hurting.
My chest feels super heavy. It might be anxiety. I am so anxious this afternoon. I have so much to get done in here before Wednesday, and I can't move.
Fantod, sorry you are at the ER with your mom. Sounds like me the other day. They sent me home though. Hope have less pain as the day goes on.
Twinmom: Hurray for three day weekends! I'm happy that your anniversary was nice. Now rest from your cleaning! *finger wag*
Angelajo: Noooo - it's not laziness if you're resting for your health! Anyone that has ever needed/was forced to bed rest knows that it's awful. Allowing yourself to rest as much as your body demands can be harder than most painful chores we face. In my eyes: you're strong if you rest, not weak.
Idajoy: I'm sorry you had to cancel on your plans to see the game! It's considerate of you not to want to get other people sick. I hope you feel better soon. Keeping my fingers crossed for that move!
BlueSky: Cake? Moist, yummy cake? I see. *tries not to look jealous* My partner is far better at baking than I am. I'll switch off the mixing with you, if you don't mind waiting a few days between turns as the batter flies across continents. ;)
Fantod: So sorry to hear about your mother's scary episode. I hope everything turns out well! Good luck! I hatehate being cold. Start setting some files on fire in protest and to stay warm, that'll get the point across for them to bring you a blanket.
*wave to all to follow*
Anyways, I will catch up with everyone later. I'm on my phone and it's about to die.
Hugs!
Fantod, sorry about your mom. Healing hugs to you both. I hope she is ok. That's funny about the champagne. Can't blame her for wanting to get out of there.
Sonya, thanks for helping with the batter and splatter lol
Bbmom, I hate it when people drink. I don't find their attitudes amusing. I'm sending you all the energy and patience I can gather!
Well it's been very interesting trying to bake the cake today while... stopping every 10 mins for the bubble guts episodes. Yesterday I had trouble going, today it's Oh gee. I got half way through the batter whippings and shifted it to my husband, told him had to run off again "sorry". He looked annoyed. Poor guy. I saw the look on his face because he made me a sandwich and and sat down thinking his "duties" were finished. Lol. Have to get ready to take the cat to the vet... we'll see if I can make it. Might have to ask the annoyed husband.
Talk laters.....
