Odd nicknames: Honus Wagner of pro baseball, a legend in his own time, earned the nickanme "Flying Dutchman". Here's where it gets weird. The name's origin is that of a mythical ship doomed to never make port, an omen of nautical doom, and so forth. (Hence its use in Pirates of the Caribbean film) The legend goes back to the 1600s (it's believed, not known). Originally, it was termed the flying (fleeing) Dutchman, meaning it was a Dutch ship that failed to make port before a hurricane/tropical storm on Africa's Cape, and ever since has appeared to warn of bad weather. Capitalizing the F in Flying came later. Other versions say the story originated from an actual Dutch ship, whose captain was notoriously foul-mouthed and/or not-pious-by-standards, and he insisted he could take his ship into harbor despite headwinds and similar. Africa's Cape being rounded meant dealing with Table Mountain and all that convergence of this an dthat, but the point is, the alleged captain swore he'd rather be damned than stop beating against aforementioned winds, the vessel sank, and it is now appropriately doomed to appear and so forth and so on.
The motif of a fleeing (flying, in nautical terms of the day) Dutch ship appears in the OBrien novel series about Captain Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, when a large Dutch ship fleeing them in the novel heels over in a storm and is lost with all hands aboard. Tho' the two ships were enemies, etc., (and yes, the ship goes down off the Cape of Good Hope in the Roaring Forties AKA the stormy as shinola latitudes down there) but the British crew watches in horror. Their lucky shot having damaged the other ship etc., not exactly unexpected, and yet... at sea, it's different. Excellent read, btw, it's the novel in the series titled Desolation Island. (I own all of them.) Set in Napoleonic era wars.
Overt references and re-tellings number in the dozens. Poe had at it, SpongeBOb SquarePants has a Flying Dutchman, you name it.
The Flying Dutchman also became an opera by, no relation to Honus.... Richard Wagner. (Yes, the Ride of the Valkyries guy.)
The phrase "dystopian novel" is used a lot the last 15-20 yeaars, but here's the thing... Dystopia is the opposite of Utopia... But Utopia is Greek for Not-Place or Nowhere, and was used sarcastically by Sir Thomas More for his "perfect" place in his work of that title, b/c More knew no such place could exist in human worlds. So dystopia means bad-nowhere. Yet dis- as a prefix from Latin (hijacked by we Anglophones into any use we can find) actually means "away"/"sundered"/"apart", so this Latin prefix plus Greek root equals... "away-place". Wait, what? See, this is what happens when you look up things....

OK, gotta get ready for... well, chdecking to see if any fleas survived the second pesticide treatment. I found two weak little ones on my white socks yesterday. Squish. The weird thing is, vacuuming is meant to stimulate eggs to hatch so the larva can be affected by the teratogenic (mutation-causing) crap in the pesticide, and make them into fleas without mouths. I feel like the bad mad doctor in an old horror film...
Love ot all, peace upon you,
Leo

Lately I've been feeling scared and full of anxiety. I recently found a lump under my nipple. I hurt my back too. I'm in the process of moving. I'm run down. Everything is hard
-
89FNo energy, just going to do whatever. Sandra, It's hard to move at a certain time in life. You've been in your home forever, at least you'll be able to travel to the beach and enjoy. Oh, we did hear Boris Johnson's tenure ended due to a series of ethics scandals, accusations of dishonesty and a final collapse of government support that forced his recognation. What he didn't do like the...

My plan today is... well, what I need is to hide for a day, and give myself a day off. WHat I am going to do is take care of Mom's apartment, collect her bills and tot up what's what, continue boxing up my house so the workers can replace two ceilings and two bathroom floors at some point in the (hopefully immediate) future... Deal with the horrible musty smell of "this space has not been open to air since 1968", which isnt so much mold as it is 50 years of old dust and I swear all fans do is blow more dusty-musty... Yeah, this is gonna be a slog!
Big hugs to all who follow, and may your team win! At whateer sport. (My Pirates went down to the nats. Gah.)
Mom's blood work showed that her heart is under stress. She was formally admitted last night and moved from observation to a room. She is having an echocardiogram today and possibly a cath tomorrow. She has six stents from a serious heart attack two years ago. I'm thinking that maybe one of them has collapsed. Hard to know at this point.
Going to *try* and sleep some more before trying to go up to the hospital. Leo - I've read the O'Brien series of books. They are wonderful! AngelaJo - I hope that you can get some more rest today and will feel better. Talk to you all later.
Angela, I'm sorry you were up so early and struggling with several issues. I sure hope your day improves. Gentle hugs.
Leo, gentle hugs for your PTSD and the musty smell you have to deal with. I hate that yucky feeling when the house is out of sorts and smells that way. We've been through water damage when our water pump burst in my bedroom at our first house. It was spewing everywhere and a nightmare.
Fantod, I'm sorry you had a rough day at the ER yesterday and that you are feeling so terrible this morning. I hope a little more sleep and rest helps. I hope your mom is doing well and the doctors find everything that could be wrong.
Blue, I hope the cake turned out yummy and that the vet appointment went good despite your tummy issues. I hate more than anything when my husband makes me feel like an inconvenience. I wish they would just see that we need help and have a peaceful caring heart to do such, w/o us even asking. I hope your tummy feels better today.
Sonya, gentle hugs and thanks! I know I always tell everybody to listen to their bodies and stop when they need to, but I never listen to myself, more cleaning to be done. haha
ida, I'm sorry you had to cancel today, but it's not your fault you are sick. They will get over it, even if he was slightly disappointed when you cancelled. Hugs and don't worry about it. I hope your anxiety gets better and your anxiety passes, I hate hearing how your chest is bothering you. It's always scary even if it's from anxiety.
And Silver's appt went well. His ulcer is pretty much healed except for a tiny little mark you can barely see, so the doc said to keep him on the eye drops meds for one more week and if the mark is still there to bring him in in about 2 weeks. But if it's gone by then, don't worry about it.
I think I only have one more day's worth of this wretched antibiotic I have to take and then I'm done. But I read in the print-out that diarrhea and upset stomach may continue for weeks or months afterwards. Oh no! What did that dentist do to me? Btw, my tooth pain is still there. I went to the drug store to get preparation H wipes because I was bleeding yesterday. My husband said to me last night when we crawled into bed, "Wasn't today a good day? We baked a cake!" I've been nauseous and had the sh*ts for a week. I felt like I was in hell today and sh*tting razor blades all day... and I'm so swollen down there. Yeah, it was a good day, alright! Good for you. ARGHHH. He put his head down in defeat. And I didn't tell him how drained I felt, I just didn't want to overload him.... I just know I'm looking forward to that time off at the B & B for my birthday soon. I hope to God I'll be feeling better by then.
Don't know if I'm going to church today. We'll see.
Angela, sorry the ambulance triggered you and your pain is way up today. Sending peace and comfort your way. I hope you can get some rest today and your dog will snuggle you.
Ida, I somehow missed you yesterday.... ditto what Twin said. It's not your fault you had to cancel. I hope your anxiety has eased up a bit today. Oh that chest crushing feeling is no fun and I hope you are feeling better. Hugs.
Leo, that's still a lot to get through... so I'm sending you all the strength and patience I can gather! Healing hugs for your PTSD...
Fantod, I'm sorry about your mom's heart and your fibro. I will say a prayer for you both. Hugs
Twin, I can see how you're worried about the MTX. I would be too if I were in your shoes. I know when I stop taking a medicine I'm not so sure about, I have anxiety too. If you realize it was doing somehting good for you, can you pick back up with it? Or is that it, you're done? I hope church and the rest of your Sunday is good!
Angela, I'm glad you got more sleep and enjoyed a long shower. Yesterday was 90 degrees for us and today it feels like 68 out there, not too bad, but I'm cold. haha Your chicken sounds yummy! I hope you have a great rest of the day!
Fantod, I hope your afternoon goes quick and you'll be back at home resting soon. I'm glad your mom is doing fine enough to be complaining. LOL. I hope you have a good evening and your mom starts feeling much better after the procedure tomorrow. Gentle hugs
I unloaded my groceries, made my lunch for tomorrow, organized the girls bookcase, and am now enjoying some chocolate chips. haha. I did drink a chocolate protein shake with it, so I'm good right. :-) I'm in a lot of pain, but church was great today and he called anyone having doubt in their life to come down and get prayed for. I of course went down b/c I always doubt that I will feel better and I really needed that today. I love our pastor Jon Chasteen.
Take care everyone.
I stayed home from church as this virus is making feel rotten. I told hubby to tell our friends to come over if he would pick up a pizza. They are such good friends that everything is really laid back when they are around. I cut up a few vegetables, and with the pizza, that was our lunch. I just vegged out in my recliner, and they all served themselves coffee and what-not. Hubby helped a lot, so I didn't really do anything. The Packers won, and our friends have since gone home. Hubby and I just had teriyaki wings from the freezer, so that was an easy meal too.
My head is so plugged up, and my ears hurt. A bit of a sore throat, and just general malaise. I have a tooth ache as well, so I suppose I need to get that looked at. I see my ortho guy for an injection in my knee tomorrow morning. Tuesday I find out what my GP is going to do about my heart thing. I found out that my type of angina is a spasm of the artery. How weird is that.
Time for me to rest. I have to do some cleaning tomorrow and thursday for the realtors coming on wednesday morning. We did get some stuff done this weekend, and hubby vacuumed this morning. I didn't even have to ask him, which was super nice.
Take care all, and I'm sorry to hear of all the struggles going on in our group.
