I think Callistal's advice about the 5 minute cool-down period for him (but really its for you) is an awesome idea... go in with that... it seems like it could be your only defence- a "time -out " in a situation liike this.
Personally.. though unhelpful.. I'd retort with a well.. my pain is climbing on the ladder too..... not to make light of his threats but I don't know the whole story but I am sure YOU need someone looking out for you right now too. All of us will try from here I'm sure.

Saying he will "try" to get along with you is so much hogwash. In the immortal words of Yoda, "do or do not - there is no try."
He either wants to make it work or he doesn't - his words are saying one thing and his behavior another. Behavior is the truth - not words.
He drove to a state park, lived in his car for three days without eating, made himself very sick, and then came back and checked himself into a psych ward. Didn't really help him, as he was a master at telling the docs what they wanted to hear, but it stopped the cycle for a while.
The only person any of us can control is ourselves. We are NOT responsible for anyone else, no matter how close the relationship. What they do is on them. This kind of threat, when made during arguments, or over and over again when the person threatening is not getting what they want, is pure manipulation, and giving into it is enabling.
This is very much like addiction in the sense that he will either get help or die - and there is nothing you could or should do about it - it's on him either way.
I Blamed myself...his family Blamed me...Very dark time in my Life...am STILL Traumatized to this day...25 YEARS later..
Your man is All grown up now...either he gets himself some Real help or he cares Nothing for the relationship...IF he Truly Loves you...he would NOT want to harm YOU/this Relationship this way...what he does is ON Him.
