I don't. My type 1 son has a bracelet, but doesn't wear one to school; all the staff know him. I think it would make him feel bad/different. He is 7 and very worried about being "different". Emergencies are so easy with him that he must wear it out in public in the event he was lost.

Do you have an IEP for him? If not, you both will benefit from it. Your son should not have to test if feeling terrible, ect.

I waer one for my epilepsy but it says MULTIPLE MEDS so at least docs will know I'm on multiple meds.

I wear one because I have an anaphylactic reaction to any kind of nuts in foods (makes eating in a restaurant a real adventure sometimes) and a bad reaction to epinephrine, which is what they give when I have the nut reaction. I also have chronic migraines, so at any given time I could be on some kind of painkiller and unable to make a lot of sense. I didn't have room to put the fibro on the bracelet, but I am right on top of keeping all my medical info including prescriptions up to date on the Medic Alert website. I've had a bracelet for 20 years, and it's real peace of mind for me. Leo, I wish I'd have thought to put MULTIPLE MEDS on the bracelet since I'm on meds for migraines and fibro. That's a great idea.

Lynn, when all Ihad to list was my epilepsy and was not on any FM meds, life was simpler, but I am on PTSD meds now too so.... Yeah, I was sitting there thinking, "What do I put on this thing?!" and my mom (a retired nurse) said: "Just say multiple meds, and make sure you and your hubby both have an up-to-date list in your wallets, they'll check there for more information." I was like, "Oh! Holy crap!"

There is a flash drive available for medical information that you can attach to your key chain. You enter all of the info on your computer. You can find this device online.

You can also do two things in your cell phone. Put an entry in your contacts labeled ICE which stands for Incase of Emergency. EMTs or emergency responders will check your phone for this entry. Choose someone that you know is likely to answer their phone.

And, you can put important medical info on hour phone using an app or in an area that allows you to write notes.

I have one for secondary adrenal insufficiency and PCN allergy. I don't think it's needed for fibro.

When I ran marathons I had a "road id" bracelet because you don't normally carry a wallet while running. It has an emergency contact number & you can enter all medical & insurance info online for emergency responders to call & get. I've thought about still wearing mine but I think it would bother my wrist. They also have dog tags.

Thanks for all the responses. To answer some questions, he does not have an IEP, but we are in the process of establishing a 504 plan (like an IEP but for medical stuff as opposed to mental/special Ed). I have a flash drive with scanned copies of every test, procedure, medical history, etc. I have a 3 inch binder of it all that I got tired of carrying around. He used to wear a bracelet because he developed asthma at 5 months old and I was afraid day care center would forget, etc. but when he got enough to explain it himself, we let him get rid of it because he hated it.

Go for dog tags. I love 'em. They do NOT get in the way nearly as much as a bracelet (which I hated wearing), and if you get ones that are stainless steel, they last for-freaking-ever. My stainless steel chain wore out bfeore the tag did.

Please, please, if you do get these? AVOID GOLD AND SILVER. EMTs will assume it's regular jewelry and not look. I was told this by 2 EMTs over the last 20 years, and I believe them.

This document will insure that you child is always getting the care and time that he needs. The attitude of the school under these federal guidelines has totally changed the perfect care by all staff. They DO NOT play with disability laws.

My son has an IEP for his type 1 diabetes. These are used many times for medical issues. It just depends on how much help they need. They let him check his BG and keeps him from taking test while sugar is not controlled. I made sure that everything, I mean, every scenario was covered.

I have had no calls from the school on sick days, ect.

An IEP defines the individualized objectives of a child who has been found with a disability, as defined by federal regulations.

I think a 504 is like the first step here. If it doesn't work, then they move to IEP.

One thing we do as we have two kiddos with autism is keep a laminated sheet in the car explaining the boys conditions, who to contact if we are unresponsive, that they become non verbal under stress and what can get them to talk (aka toys that we keep in the car as well).
The list also includes what hospital to send them to (preferred) and who their doctors are and their contact information. And what meds they are on as well.


There are template forms out there on the web for this kind of thing.

As an EMT, I would look for a bracelet, but I don't have the time or the ability to look on a website for your meds. Maybe they use that more at the doctors. Having an ICE on your phone and a list of drugs you are on is the best way to go. However, I have never, and probably will never go through a woman's wallet to find this. But if you had a bracelet with multiple meds on it, it may prompt me to look in the future. I just haven't ever seen it.
