Always Either Hot or Cold

Hi, all. I have myofascial pain and some symptoms of fibro, and for the last year and a half, I've been having a really bad problem with temperature regulation and intolerance to heat and cold. I live in Chicago and it is extremely painful for me to be outside for even a few seconds. I start hyperventating, shivering violently, and it just feels painful. But as soon as I go to a heated room or car, I have to - within a minute of being freezing - take off all extra layers. I'll ask other people around if they are hot and they give me strange looks and say they feel fine. And I'll be sweating profusely.

Does this ever happen to you? I had two different blood tests for my thyroid, and the result was normal. Wondering if it's a common symptom of fibro to have this extreme intolerance to a temperature that's anything more or less than a perfect 72 degrees. Or if it could be a side effect from the methadone I started taking a year and a half ago.

Please reply yes or no and any ideas for what is happening.

I am sitting here wrapped up in a wool shawl and two pairs of socks on. I know the minute I get up and start cleaning the kitchen I will be hot and start peeling off one of my layers.

I remember reading somewhere that fibromyalgia can cause heat regulation problems. I know that to be true as I never feel actually comfortable. Either hot or cold.

I too feel for you I freeze when I step out side, but when I am in I am hot. it's strange my hubbie always says it must be mental pause.. Cause I go mental with it. It's crazy I agree, I cannot handle the heat or the air conditioning. The other thing is med's play a large part in how are podies react to heat and cold. cymbalta used to give me sweat, night sweat all day loong. Then at bed my leg which is damaged due to RSD kills me and my body feels for. It is sympathetic dystrophy. another stupid thing to know about.. I am sorry you are going through this but your not alone okay. Any time you want to vent I am here. Isabee

I am almost always too hot and sweating. I know the vicodin adds to the sweating and so does my weight. But its beyond the normal sweating, it gets really bad, especially for sweating on my face! Its so embarrassing! Im always sweating undering my boobs too!

Oh mercy! I know exactly what you're talking about! My body has a terrible time with trying to regulate temperatures as well. If it's about 72 degrees then I am perfectly fine! Strange! When I go to sleep (or try to) I start heavily sweating like it's 100 degrees in my otherwise very chilly room. I wake up drenched in sweat almost every day. Whenever I go out shopping for groceries or otherwise, I become terribly hot and sweaty. My face becomes beat red and I literally perspire. It's awful! I had my thyroid checked as well and all is normal. There doesn't seem to be any other reason for this temperature issue outside of fibro. So I guess it's just another symptom! Gah!

Sounds like there are many of us cold blooded animals on here. I have those night sweats, too. Anyone know if it is due to the fibro vs medicine? I also drive evryone around me nuts with changing layers or fanning myself...or convulsing.

I've read a lot about fibro and often come across "temperature sensitivity" listed as one of it's symptoms. This is also characteristic of hypothyroidism which I have in addition to the fibro.

I'm always adjusting the amount of layers I"m wearing throughout the day and night. I've learned to stop asking people around me about it being hot or cold because I know the answer is never what I want to hear. Hang in there though, you do begin to find a rhythm or pattern to when the hot flash/cold flash hit.

I canrelate I have problems with cold, mostly some hot. My feet are always cold can never get them warm .The only time I can get them warm is with tennis shoes or slippers.My hands are always cold. My body is always cold. Sometimes I am hot, was told that is due to menopause. I can relate have been tested for my thrroid but comes out normal to.Was told by the neurologist that is a symptom of the fibro also!!!

Yes it happens to me as well. Cold is much worse then heat for me, but at times once I get warm then I feel overheated.

yes it happens, the best way I can explain it is that my thermostat is broken.

My Doc has told me it is part and parcel with the autonomic disregulation that FMS suffers tend to have.

I know that doesn't help much, but for me it seems to help knowing that I am not crazy :)

I am completely heat intolerant. Can't stand it and often feel like I am suffocating during the summer if I have to be outside for any length of time. This winter, I've noticed that I am becoming less tolerant as well. The fun never stops. Take care.

Okay, so sounds like it is due to the fibro. I also have been having a problem where my scalp burns if I do anything like put hair dye on or even scratch my head or just rest the back part of my head on a pillow that isn't too comfortable. I'm guessing my nervous system is just fired up and out of whack and that's why I get the temperature problems too.

I have Hashi's as well as Fibro so I know what u mean about hot and cold.
All day am cold and night hot!
Last summer was my worst, was in a non stop flair, they were taking their time dx me... And I just couldn't handle the humidity!! Felt so sick with the heat!! Now was overheated all the time!!
Doesn't help either to be 49 almost 50 prob menopausal influences as well

Sheesh, I sure can relate to this. My thermostat is broken too.I am either way too hot or too cold. Can't find that happy middle ground. It sure is frustrating. My family and co-workers just look at me like I am crazy or something! :(
