I am not one to completely deny religion. However, as a child I was raised by a religious family that was almost cultist in it's nature. I wasn't sent to public school (or private), or allowed to have friends or acquaintances outside of the church. Religion was held as more important than breath, or even education. My step-mother was very strict on me, she went even beyond the rules of the church they attended to nit pick everything I wore and destroy every shred of self identity that I attempted to establish. As a teenager I jumped into a marriage as fast as I could to get away from them.
Now as an adult, I have tried to go back and establish a somewhat normal relationship with my parents. Sadly, they get up in my face and scream and holler, and proclaim that I am doomed to hell because of my wicked ways. Their use of religion is, in ways, abusive.
Recently, I decided to break off from them completely despite the fact that I yearn for love and acceptance from them that I could never quite get no matter how hard I tried.
It is really hard because I have no social life outside of that which they forced on me, and it has taken a lot for me to gain the social skills to function outside of their world. I feel very alone, and isolated, because without associating with them, or people from their church, I have no one.

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...

It's not that people want to "cancel" Christmas; just that every religion should be able to observe their holiday. In areas where there is a predominant faith that will be out, it is wise to have off. That's why we have off for the two Jewish ones.
People do *not* get off for Ramadan; it's a month; not a day.
I agree that therapy can be a great help to you and as someone here has said it can help the way you respond to their behaviour
I don't think this is a skirmish about anyone's faith... Please keep it nice
The whole reason why I said anything is b/c something was mentioned about Muslims and I felt the need to step in to correct a misconception. Islam gets enough bad press so as it is.
I hope we can stay on topic from now on. This is about lady's issue.
Sorry for the digression folks, but when someone twists your words, I think it is important to clarify. Lady is talking about abusive use of religion and I agree with her. That should never be done no matter who does it.

The point is, if you want to do good by God, go to the text and understand it in context. People should not twist the Word of God to justify abuse.
Hugs, Lady. Maybe try a Quaker or Unitarian faith group? They tend to be very warm and embracing without all the fire and brimstone. : )
", I am sorry to be so blunt, but you are wrong. Not to make this about a religious thing, but Muslims do NOT have distain for Christmas."
That is twisting what I said because you insinuate that I am saying that all Muslims have disdain for Christmas. I never said that and that is not the way I feel. I don't think ALL Muslims feel the same about anything, as is true with Christians or any other religious group. I do feel entitled, however, to state a fact about what the Muslim groups did in my community. I think that was a clear example of religious overzealousness and abuse.

I'm tired of having the media and the general populace depict Muslims in a negative light.
Lady was specific with her experience; you were not.
For MY last time, true Muslims OR true Christians for that matter, would NOT use their faiths to tear people down.
I am not so arrogant as to say that I know everything, but I think you WERE implying something. When I actually inferred it and called you on it, you backpedaled.
Read your original post about Muslims and you will see that you did generalize. Maybe not on purpose, but that's what I got from it. And if that was NOT your intention, you could have apologized, but rather, you dug in your heels.
But we all agree that religion should not be used to hurt others or as an excuse to manipulate children, as was the case here. Lady should not accept this behavior and should remove herself from the situation if possible.
