I'm thinking she's stalling because she doesn't have it, because she tossed it or pawned it.
The item is a computer hard drive. How do you put a value on someone's life's work in digital form? I really hope she still has it, but she did mention she threw away a bag of his clothes, without looking to see what all was in the bag. I believe she still has it, based on a text from a couple of weeks ago in which she PROMISED she's give it to me, once she got around to it.
Oh well...off to the copier I go!
"My son keeps asking whether I got the item from her"
"She's 5 months along now"
"Do you have any advice on what I can do to get this item from M?"
Your son isn't going anywhere fast so what's the rush? From what I've read, he's in a panic. Ok, i's a reasonable response because he's locked up and can't do shite. But what he can do is get mamma all upset.
Personally, I'd let her enjoy the coming birth of her child. Being pregnant is such a sweet time, often noted in baby books and remembered for years and years at family gatherings. Do you really want your intrusion to be an entry? Remember, most everything to pregnant women is a huge event.
Suggestion: Apologise to her. A small gift of flowers or a teddy bear for her baby wouldn't go amiss. You can always get back to this later on. Because if you continue to piss her off (especially while she is pregnant) you might never ever get what you want.
You have tried the nice route, informing her that if she doesn't return the item that you will see her in court. That might make her more willing to comply. As far as value is concerned, maybe ask your son about info on it that will difficult or impossible to retrieve and will impact future jobs and the value of what it will take to reproduce what he once had.... Just some thoughts.
Deena, please don't take the above wrong. I agree with going the nice route, and if she is just now starting to engage her, I would completely agree with what you say. However from the sounds of it, the woman is being difficult and the courts may need to be involved to "convince" her to return the item in question.
I'm on my laptop right now, getting ready to look up how to file a civil lawsuit. *sheesh* As I told M, she's the one who's in control here. As soon as I have the hard drive back, that'll be the last she ever hears cfrom me.
Anyway, I'm getting out of this conversation ... it's just too ... soapy?
But hey, go for it. Sue everyone to your delight. That's how our sons, husbands, boyfriends, etc, have ended up where they are now. We stopped talking to each other and just handed our lives over to the legal system. Yeah for us.
I agree trying to settle this by talking, and it was attempted. Court is always the last option!
If I owed you thousands of dollars and no matter what you said or did, and I still didn't pay, you would have no choice but to go through the courts to recieve your money. There is a point where you will no longer allow someone to take advantage of trying to work things amicably.
But as I'm on a roll .. a personal beef is that you show no sympathy towards your son's ex at this time in her life. It's as if she should somehow pay because you had it tougher than she's had? What's that all about?
"Heck...when I was pregnant, I lived in a school bus with no running water. I had to take the 5-gallon water container outside to the well, pump the handle to get the water to flow, and carry the heavy thing back into the bus. Not only that, but I gave birth to all three of my babies at home, with no doctor. So...I'm having a very difficult time having any sympathy for M."
When I was pregnant I lived in the humid south and had two active kids who needed baths daily. I had to prime a pump to fill up the number three tub. There wasn't a toilet inside, only an outhouse. The youngest had to be woken up at midnight due to her wetting the bed. And since there was an angry badger roaming around in the dark, I had to walk her to the outhouse armed with a rugar. So don't tell me how tough life can be. Life is what it is. We all have our problems.
There is a third but I don't see the point. You are not here for SOs ... so ... shrug ...
