I first thought it was a show like "I almost got away with it", I didn't realize it was about the miscarriage of justice.

A couple of decades ago, DAs would brag about the great job they were doing convicting the guilty and keeping the public safe from all the "vermin" they called criminals. DAs and prosecutors also would have the citizens of this country believe that they rarely convicted an innocent man or woman; that, despite the rare false conviction, they got it right most of the time.
When someone in prison said that they were innocent of their charges, few people believed them. After all, they were just convicts and we knew that convicts are never truthful. Shame on us for not having a more open mind.
But then there came this pesky thing we call DNA. How inconvenient for prosecutors and their image over the years.
Now, years later, we see that the DAs and prosecutors of this country have been doing a poor job of ensuring that justice is done. This country's Innocence Projects have hundreds and hundreds of cases in which innocent men were convicted due to perjury by a state's witness---many times by LE---by hiding evidence, or some other form of prosecutorial misconduct. Shame on these prosecutors for feeding the public these kinds of lies.
A few years ago, the policemen of this country were one institution that most people thought represented fairness and justice---and they were well respected. Yes, there were a few bad apples and some truly shameful incidents on the part of LE, but the prevailing theory was that these incidents were few and far between. Years back, most American citizens trusted people in LE. When the African Americans and minorities year after year complained about police brutality, in most cases, we did not believe them. Their pleas fell on deaf ears.
But then there came this pesky little thing we call cell phones. And guess what---these phones have cameras!!!!!!!
Now we have a clearer picture of what LE has been up to in this country over the years----shooting unarmed citizens---some as young as 12 years old---- without justification, sexually assaulting women, and bullying people using the power of their badge. The truth is that this has probably been happening for years, but it took modern technology such as the cell phone cameras to bring this to the forefront.
What a truly reprehensible situation we have when the very people who are paid to protect us engage in this kind of activity.

Yep, all cops are are just murdering thugs and all SO's are waiting in the bushes to snatch someones kid.
Give it a friggin' rest already.
That's all I'm gonna say.
Rape and attempted murder and served 18 yrs before the Innocence Project took the case, and proved he wasn't the perpetrator. He goes to sue the county for $30 million (yep, that's right) for charging him when they had evidence to clear him and reason to investors someone else, but because he pissed off the wrong people, they sat on this info.
Now, he is being charged and tried for another murder, and everything points to evidence being planted by the county LE....
Remeber it is not only about LE but everyone involved in the justice system ...
Let not forget that police corruption has been around since the creation of police departments. Does anyone not know that at one time whole departments and precincts were on the mobs payroll? Let that sink in for a minute.
Once people have watched it and want to comment, have questions or an INTELLIGENT rebuttal please stop.
I have read Kratz' rebuttal and the film makers rebuttal to that. I have read just about everything on this case. Supposedly the hacker group Anonymous is set to release more evidence today which will further clear Avery. They rarely fail to deliver so I'm curious to see what they have.
To frame Avery the cops didn't have to kill Ms Halbach. All they had to do is just not pursue any other leads in the case and gather evidence that supports what they wanted or preferred their case to be. That means someone wouldn't have to 'talk' at all. If you read about how they investigated this case you'll see they ignored other person's of interest in Ms. Halbach's life such as her ex-boyfriend that already had a restraining order against him by another young woman. Why were all her voicemail messages mysteriously deleted? And these examples are just about those pieces of evidence. Enough questions can be asked about almost all those pieces of evidence that were presented in trial that makes a person wonder exactly how can something laying in plain sight be missed, not once, not twice but up to 4 or 5 times before it was 'discovered'?
The motive of the county sheriff's office was $36million to not have to pay out to someone they had stolen the life of by looking no where else for evidence in the 1985 case too. The county that the case was transferred to was no better than where it came from with a corrupt prosecutor that sexually harassed the victims in crimes he was prosecuting and then using his power to keep them quiet. This is not the actions of what I would call an "honest man" do any of you?
I know nothing of Avery's innocence, but that isn't what this is about. I see people get so caught up in the details of this or that, which are important here, but not the jist of this series. The jist of this series is to show that there was reasonable doubt, that there were some nefarious actions made by numerous members of the Manitowoc County Sheriff's office, who shouldn't have ever stepped foot on the crime scene after they recused themselves.
This case reminds me much of the OJ Simpson case... He was acquitted, I can't say that he didn't earn that acquittal, although in my mind that didn't make him innocent because I am still hung up on the blood soaked leather glove that he couldn't try on over latex gloves in the courtroom. (because blood is 90% water, water shrinks leather, driving gloves are made from fine soft leather that when wet shrinks and stretches easily enough to make it one size smaller or larger than it was originally when it was purchased) But that is still my opinion, and while I may not believe he is/was innocent, I believe the acquittal was legally sound. Remember all this stuff isn't about JUSTICE OR TRUTH... it is about the Legal system and the rules and games that are played within it.
I am firmly not saying that all LE are corrupt and horrible people, as there are few of those retired or former LE officers that are here. I even have an uncle that is a retired Oak Park, IL cop. But when you consider the number of counties in this country and the number of local criminal courts. Let's say that there are 50,000 of these juridictions in our country. And lets be conservative and say that only 1% of those juridictions participate in corrupt nefarious activities against the citizens that they are investigating. That 500 juridictions that are putting innocent people in jail and ruining countless lives. Is 500 an acceptable number? Or is it only acceptable if it isn't your jurisdiction that is affected by this nefarious activity? The bad apples, when it comes to putting someone in prison that is innocent of the crime, are they acceptable? It is OK if only a few innocent people go to jail? That wasn't what our judicial system was made on. The original intent was to completely avoid putting innocent in prison for something they didn't do even if a few guilty got away. Somewhere in the last 200 years that belief got lost in vengeance and retribution thinking.
Steven isn't a real bright man and I don't believe he suffers from mental illness other than PTSD... Again, he was passing through intake at Dodge Correctional the same time my husband was and was considered a celebrity to many of the inmates there. My husband wasn't one of them, but many were. I have experienced too much of the Wisconsin criminal justice system to believe that there aren't LE and prosecutors that will stop at nothing to get the outcome they want.
EVERYBODY agrees. Some retired judges will tell you the same thing.
The only people who refuse to believe this are the foolish enablers and apologists who always want to give LE and the prosecutor the benefit of the doubt. Any attempt to minimize this behavior is just ignorant.
We have given the benefit of the doubt to these people all too often, and you can see where it has gotten us.
Lying and perjury is rampant among LE and state's witnesses. Some of the DAs are no better than LE.
To deny that LE is not a problem in these injustices is just stupid---pure stupidity. There is no other word to describe it.
Nobody is saying that all policeman are rougue cops. I don't beleive it and most reasonable people don't either, but there are too many willing to lie and do underhanded acts to garner a conviction at all costs.
