Tips for Staying Committed to a Healthy Lifestyle
by Julia Feindt
Everyone says they want to live healthy, but without a proper plan it is difficult to change bad habits.
Why do you want to live a healthier lifestyle? It’s hard to stick to goals when you don’t know why you set them in the first place. Try writing down your reasons on a note card and putting it on your mirror. Be specific in your answers, it is not enough to say "I want to feel better." Maybe it is having more energy to play with your kids, maybe it is to be able to continue doing athletic activities as you age. There are many reasons, but make sure you know what they are as they relate to your day to day life. Here are a few questions to help determine why a goal is important to you:
► Why do you want to set this goal?
► What will happen when you accomplish it or make it a habit?
► How does this bring you closer to the person you want to be?
► How will this goal improve your life?
Answering these questions and putting them on paper will really help you stick to your commitments instead of being resistant to them. Healthy changes can sometimes feel like a chore, but if you look at them in a new light, it changes everything!
Stock Your Fridge, Purge Your Cabinet
Diet is a huge part of being healthy, and planning is key when it comes to nutrition. If you aren’t stocking up on healthy foods you enjoy, then you’re more likely to indulge in unhealthy snacks, fast food and overeating in order to satisfy a craving. Stay motivated by making a meal plan and having foods like nuts, berries and veggies on hand. When you’re at the grocery store, before you give in to the temptation of buying an unhealthy item, walk by it knowing you can always go back if you want it. Chances are the temptation will pass. Be sure to avoid shopping while hungry, you are less likely to make smart choices when your stomach is growling.
Also, cabinet purges help: sticking to your diet is much easier when temptation is not easily accessible, you are very unlikely to go out to the store impulsively and buy cookies rather than eating cookies staring at you in your cabinet.
Make an Appointment to Exercise
Treat working out as an important meeting with yourself, as if you’re meeting with your boss. You can even schedule this with a friend or partner, as external accountability helps tremendously. Furthermore, your gym may have fitness classes and this is a perfect way to have everything planned out, or another specified time such as before/after work. The most important part is to not beat yourself up about it, use each day as a fresh start and an opportunity to better your health!
Mark Your Calendar
Another great way to stay committed to the healthy lifestyle you envision is to actively see that you are achieving your goals. Put a calendar on your wall or use a planner and write an “X” on days you stick to your goals, whether it’s going all day with no sugar, drinking more water, sleeping longer or taking your vitamins. Seeing your own consistency will make you think twice about skipping the next day.
Appreciate Yourself
Each day write or think of 5 things you are grateful for. It is hard starting a goal and seeing how far away the very end is, but when you see all the beautiful changes and struggles you conquer along the way and appreciate every moment, it becomes more rewarding. For example, every time you sit down to a meal you can think of how great it is that you are mindfully nourishing your body and actively taking control of your health.
Keep a Journal
Journaling is another great way to track your progress and stay committed. Keep a food log to stay accountable for what you eat each day, record how you feel as you implement healthy habits, and reflect on why you continue to work on these goals. You will soon find that eating healthy and exercising is addictive, and as those cravings or other habits you are working away from crumble away, you’ll ask yourself why you hadn’t started sooner!
Social Media
Link up to motivational people on social media, whether it's on Instagram, YouTube , a Facebook support group, Pinterest or many other channels. The internet is a wealth of knowledge and motivation! Also this information gives you so many creative ideas to help you on your journey and it shows you many other people doing the same thing or those who have done it. If you scroll through social media on a regular basis, follow fitness bloggers and healthy lifestyle advocates. That way motivating and uplifting content will always be at your fingertips.

Remember the (4) S's for weighing:
♦ Same TIME of day (on the)
♦ Same DAY each week (wearing the)
♦ Same CLOTHING (and using the)
♦ Same SCALE to Measure Yourself - Remember, sometimes the scale doesn't budge, but the waistline will.

I'm looking forward to this week's weigh-in. My accountability has had a boost by tracking calories on myfitnesspal again. Watching them add up through the day is my reminder to stay on track with what I'm eating. I can also track my exercises. That one took a while to get used to although, I just remember that toward the end of 2016, I weighed 138 so it was working very well! I like to idea of making an appointment for my exercise! For my "social media" support, I've joined the June Challenge on the same program. Thanks to Jackie Kelm's Appreciative Living program, I've become accustomed to counting my blessings and it sure helps to keep focused on positive energy. I'll be back with my weigh-in. Looking forward to great results. I hope you are as well.♥

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...

I just do not feel well and I really think that it's because I cried yesterday on my way to work about my Aunt who is in the hospital. I don't think that we will have her much longer. She is very frail. Now she needs help eating. So, this is the third time in a year that I felt this way after crying. I think crying releases toxins into my body. I also worked up a sweat at the gym...
Caroline: I'm sorry to hear you've been in the hospital for so long. Wow! Glad you were able to lose the 8# and I can only imagine how wonderful it is to be back home again. Welcome back!!!
height: 5'6" female (1.68 meters)
my reason for dieting is my wardrobe. I want to be in my goal weight range so everything fits. no worries about too small or too big. my ideal closet!
As for my weigh-in yesterday, I am down 5 pounds from last week. The daily 20 minutes of exercise is helping, logging the food, tracking calories. It's a really good feeling knowing that I'm staying on track. I'm becoming an expert at making sure I don't overeat. If my plate has too much food, I separate what I will save for the next day, rather than just eating more than I should. It's fun again!!
my plan is a lot of "diet pills" also known as yukon gold potatoes. it's the potato hack style...... penn jillete, the magician, lost over 100+ lbs that way. his book "presto" talks about it, but his book is also very vulgar. not a typical dieting book lol.
I used to count calories..... typically 1100 calories a day. I did lose weight to 135 lbs..... but it made me neurotic about food for a couple years afterwards.
recently, my father got really sick-- in and out of the hospital for almost a year-- that's when I stopped paying attention to my diet. rushing around eating a lot of fast food.
now he's stabilized so I can work on dieting again.
the potato hack is nice because I love the potatoes and it keeps me full...... I have about 20 lbs of potatoes in my apartment right now. problem is.... they are raw.
it's a pain to cook so many potatoes in the microwave. it's a slow way to prepare them..... but I don't have a full kitchen..... and I need to focus.
maybe I should buy some faux leather pants in size 8 so I can focus on my real goal......
I think there are a lot of ways to lose weight. people who like to overeat sometimes use "volumetrics",.... that's eating a large amount of low calorie food..... like 200 calories of cauliflower which is a huge amount.
I'm glad you are having fun with your meals. summer is such a great time to diet because of the fresh fruits and veggies.
LynStrife: Great job!!! It's so much fun to see our efforts pay off on that scale. Yesssssss!!
FlRetired: I hear you on portion control and healthier foods. It's amazing the things out there that have ingredients to be wary of, for sure. Just today, I had 10 gluten free crackers. 120 calories for those things is not worth it. I may as well have had another piece of gluten free toast! Normally I look at the ingredients first and that just confirmed that I can't even trust the foods that end up in the cupboard. If I didn't hand pick it myself, I have to remember to scrutinize the label. Thankfully, I'm still under calories for the day. Portion control for me is easier when I create a plate for myself rather than put everything in front of me. Getting back into better habits is so rewarding.
