Both of my parents had weigh-control problems. My mother was so obese at one time that she had to use a walker to get around. She lived on Pepsi-cola and Three Musketeers candy bars. When she was told to go on a diet by a doctor, she started eating salads, but continued drinking cola and eating candy bars. Apparently she believed that she could continue eating candy and that by eating salads, she would magically lose weight. She was mentally ill, and it affected her thinking processes.
I did not learn good eating habits from my parents. Throughout most of my childhood, my parents made sure they had food for themselves, but I was starved to the point of passing out frequently. When I escaped from my parents, I found out that I could have as much food as I wanted. There were so many foods I had never eaten as a child that I could now try. Pizza. Burritos. Cheeseburgers with French fries. And all kinds of sandwiches!
So I became a glutton. This continued until about a year and a half ago, when I realized that I needed to begin learning how to eat. It wasn't easy. I had no one to teach me. I had to learn it all by myself. I made some major mistakes, such as eating entire boxes of macaroni and cheese every day for a couple of years until I finally realized it was time to throw that garbage out and find healthy foods. I ate it because it was cheap at 39 cents a box from a food wholesaler. I got bad advice from people on how to eat. I learned that nearly all advice is bad advice, and that the only way to learn something in this life is by trial and error.
Even here on this website, I have had people attack and criticize me for what I eat now when I posted here. I call these people "hypochondriacs by proxy." It's a new kind of mental illness label that I invented. It happens when other people tell you that you don't know what you are doing and that you are going to hurt yourself when they themselves don't know what the %#@* they are talking about. You have to ignore such people or they will drag you down into the gutter where they spend their whole lives.

I was denied sweets (except for holidays or special family events) and given lots of healthy foods growing up. But I grew very fast so portion control was tricky since I had growing pains and teenager like stuff when I was 7/8/9. I had a full adult height and figure by 10 and was wearing my Mom's clothes. My weight ballooned right with my height. So I have always been overweight despite being an active kid.
Within the last 4 years I have built a relationship with my biological father and he has always been overweight - same as me. So a lot of my physical genes I have from him.
The last few years have been extremely taxing without a job and my eating fell way below any kind of normal standard. I would not eat or eat maybe once a day, of course I would eat unhealthy (cause it was cheaper) and just drink over-sugared coffee 24/7. It was both delicious and curbed my appetite so I was never hungry. My body was in total starvation mode and all my calories intake just got packed away as more and more fat. I am super lucky that I was able to move back in with my Mom and Step-Dad and they have all sorts of healthy foods available.
My weight never bothered me, I always just accepted it, and I never had any side ailments due to it. But as I have gotten older and I have been taking care of my aging Grandparents, I have seen what years of poor diet and improper eat can do, even if you lose weight (just too late). So now I am trying to turn it around sooner then later and hopefully avoid any real longterm or permanent damage.
I was small till I had kids at age 25. But have struggled ever since with focusing to lose. I will be 35 this mos.
We grew up on a dairy farm, so from the age of 7 were working sun up to sun down. All of our food came from the farm. I didn't eat at McDonalds until I was 18.
I would eat 5000 calories a day and not gain a pound.
Too this day, I eat at least 3000 calories a day, but would like to lose about 30 lbs. I am not active now that I am a city person, but if I could lower my calories, I could lose some.
Thanks Beaumont for asking this question. It is a very interesting one and we all grew up different.
My brother used to wake me up at 5:30 or 6:00 to go jogging on the frozen snow in the mornings. I was never "allowed" to begin to get pudgy although I was never skinny. Bill used to jog up ahead of me with a lollipop in his mouth and then he'd jog back to me and jog with me too.
I was always proud of my parents. My mom worked at the local doctor's office. Whenever she'd come to school for anything, all the kids told me how beautiful they thought she was, etc. Mom was in great shape in her day. My dad was always in great shape -was on the rowing team in college, etc.
I blame a lot of my issues on having MS. It's challenging to keep up any sort of pace at times but I think we all have the potential to be the phoenix that we need to be, re-create ourselves anew over and over again. At least I choose to think that way.
My mom wouldn't let sugar cereals into the house and we sure didn't drink a lot of soft drinks. She cooked pretty healthy meals. Still at 76, she forwards me emails on health issues and such.
As a Kid I could eat and eat and EAT and never really show it. Sadly those days are gone. I peaked at 250 pounds and am shooting for 200.
I know I have my work cut out for me, looking at my dna.
The good part is, I guess, is that I know what I SHOULD be eating, and I think I eat fairly healthy, I just have a problem with bad snacking (too much and not healthy choices) most of the time.
but now, I get tired easily due to meds for bipolar disorder.
