I was a teen and feeling so depressed. I learned about depression in class and knew that I may have it. I started reading books in the library that described me. Another time, I was in my teens when I was crying alone and grabbed my wrist wishing to tear my vein out instead I ended up scratching myself which was a huge sense of relief. I would cut rarely and learned what it really was called when I saw a Life Time Movie (LOL!). I didn't get help until I was I grad school but that didn't last long the therapist sucked and I could no longer afford the meds. I try on my own because it would freak my family out if I was on meds. No one knows about this stuff in my family.

I was diagnosed last week, possibly after four years of suffering to various degrees. I had a breakdown in early 2005 and ended up losing my job in 2008 - 3 years later to the nearest month. With no job and members of my family ill through old age, things came to head and for some reason I stopped taking my anticonvulsants. I was rushed to hospital and was there for nearly two weeks. It was while I was there that I asked to see a counsellor. Well it took 10 weeks to get the appointment but proved well worth the wait. I hadn't suspected depression but I'm glad to get a diagnosis. I start counselling tomorrow (something I've arranged myself - not through the hospital). That's my (relatively short) story.

First diagnosis of Depression after the birth of my son. Went to see the Pdoc cause my husband made me cause I couldn't get out of bed - literally wasn't functioning. Most recently went back and diagnosised BP - was having bouts of highs and very low lows with uncontrolable crying spells. Was so bad I couldn't go to work and had to quit.

Tried suicide at 14. Got scared after I realized I really wanted to live. Told my parents & was told to "go ahead and die." My ears were ringing so loudly for 3 days I couldn't hear. Set my goal to get older and get out. And I did but depression has always lingered in my life. Mostly tolerable until the last 10 years & I've got on and then off meds many times. Just today got back on Effexor. Don't think I'll ever stop taking meds again, even if I ever get to feeling normal again.
