Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I am going through a bout of depression right now. My ex-boyfriend, whom I've known for 13 years now, referred to me as "self-centered" when I tried to talk to him about it. (He's been through this with me many, many times before.) He didn't say it meanly, but it certainly wasn't what I needed to hear. It hurt. He knows that I consider him one of two friends I can count on. Anyway, I'm just curious to know if others have had this antiquated notion of being "self-centered" or "selfish" thrown at them when in a depression, and if so, what is the best way to deal with it, in your opinion?
Thank you.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

Does anyone follow her? She's really got some good tips.
It's like his opinion still matters to you. And it shouldn't.
These kind of guys are exes for a reason. You guys broke up for a reason.
Depression can be a clinical condition that you have no control over. For him to say that to you was ignorant and mean. Pay no attention to him. Don't even talk to him for awhile. He has no concept what you are dealing with. Just ignore his calls/texts for awhile and work on yourself. Do you think you need to speak with a therapist or go on medication? Or do you think this is hopefully just a short phase you are going through?

If I am reading this correctly this guy you are talking about is your ex-boyfriend AND a friend?? When I am going through a bout of depression it's painful and sometimes I do need to focus on myself.
However, this doesn't make you a self-centered person. If he is really important as a friend I would explain to him that you do not feel that you are self centered and that depression is an illness like any other.
You say that he knows that he is one of two friends that you can count on during these times. I have found that, at times when I am experiencing a clinician depression that people do not understand. Sometimes it's a one time thing, when the other person was having a bad day. But I've noticed that some people, who have are not familiar with depression, can seem cold and uncaring. Depending on who the person is I either try to educate and advocate of avoid. Maybe you need a mental health break from him???Hoping that you feel better and keep posting
