This is so sad. I think it is necessary for police to chase suspects but it is sad when tragedies like this happen to innocent people in the way or even to the police officers. I get so sickened by gang members and the havoc they cause on our society. The city we live in are talking about cutting 150 police officers and the gang members in our city are wearing t shirts saying 150 go, we run the show. This is scary for law abiding citizens.

Oh wow. That story IS pretty sad. I think it's necessary for police to chase suspects during a robbery. That's about it really. They can just do blockades or something like that for anything else.

Police need to change how they handle chases. The top speed interstate chase is too dangerous and any chase in a residential area should be banned.

Blockades would be a good start. There needs to be more focus in methods of actually bring the suspect car to a stop sooner than they are now. Say a police car pass the suspect car, get in front, hit a button, and a 1000 little spiked metal balls drop on the road in front of the suspect car shredding its tires as traditional spike strips cannot always be laid down in time.

There may be a technology that would allow a police officer to be able to remotely stop a car by using a device that would send out a signal that would disrupt the computer that is in most all cars on the road now. It would prevent the chase from happening or at least make sure the chase do not get out of hand.

That is a wonderful idea, ya know?.. I was thinking why dont they just get the liscense plate # but usually the vehicle is stolen also.

I, personally, witnessed a chase gone bad. The officer lost his life. I won't go into details do to the triggering nature of it all, but it's something I'll never forget.

Police have radios, they can call ahead. They don't need to have high speed chases and risk the lives of others. They have descriptions of the vehicle and can radio ahead.

Very seldom do these things end on a positive note.

And also, here in Utah, a hit and run is still just a misdemeanor, even if someone is hurt or killed. I think that is so total bullshit. There is so much hit and run here in Utah its pathetic..

There is too much attention payed to the chase itself, and not enough attention in potential ways to stop the suspect car using unconventional methods.

Hit and run in other states constitutes a felony.

RideTheWind- The thing you said about using a remote to stop a vehicle...in Fast and the Furious...or some movie like that...they had this thing where they shoot it at the racer's car and made it slow down to a stop. If I remember right, that racer crashed into a wall. :/ Anyway, I think that kind of device is real. If only they had it in a...smaller form. If they used that, it might cause some damage but not as much if the chase kept going.

There has been quite a lot of controversy over that here. I believe several counties in GA actually banned high-speed chases. There are other ways of catching the "bad guys" without as much risk to innocent bystanders.
I think that by and large most law enforcement people are truly doing what they think is best at the time. But I also think that the adrenaline and media coverage of high-speed chases can sometimes compromise their judgment a bit. I am sure that many law enforcement agencies feel a lot of pressure from media coverage. If people here that the police were in pursuit of a criminal and let them get away there'd be just as much uproar over that as there is over the high-speed chases.

yea, I think that is why I am so torn.. The police said that the chase never got over 40 miles an hour and only lasted two or three minutes.. just sad really.. I so feel for the parents and family... they are so brave..

There should be a mandatory 10 year prison sentance for anyone who causes a chase. If the punishment was cruel enough, less people would run, but as it is, the punishments for those chases a lot of the time is usually milder than the reason why they are running to begin with.

There will always be a idiot who will try to run, but if it was known that if you instigate a chase you would face a mandatory 10 year prison term, they may just decide not to run.

If the chase only lasted a couple of minutes...and I fon't know the departmental policies or state laws there....but did the pursuing officers really have a chance to call off the chase?

Similar incidents have occurred here....and there are times police will call off chases.

The Supreme Court has ruled that police are expected to make every reasonble effort and force to apprehend fleeing felons. Cops can still shoot fleeing felons in the back, if they feel anyone can be harmed by their escape. We're talking about felonies, not misdemeanors of traffic infractions.

This kind of thing affects the entire community. Prayers all around...extra prayers to the families who lost their loved ones.

That's the problem. Most people never really look ahead, nor do we ever really think of what bad consequences could come of our actions. The police are the same, more or less. They're just given less reaction time and go with what they know. If the suspect speeds off, they chase after them and it escalates from there. In my opinion, as risky as it may be, the police just need to be more calm and think much more carefully.

I think I have to blame the one driving who was fleeing the police. Blame it on alcohol, drugs, gangbanging, stupidity, lack of human compassion......the person driving that car recklessly ran an intersection while fleeing the police, and killed 2 others.

Even the police, ambulances, fire trucks, slow down or even stop before crossing an intersection at a red light. They are trained that way. They are not out to harm the public.

Gangbangers??? Well...they live by a different (cant say PRINCIPLE)....they live by a different theory. Out for themselves....escape, or die by trying.

I hope the laws there provide a stiffer penalty than the original charges....Convict on every possible charge!!.
