Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Having that ideology is dangerous. mainly because it demands an ultimatum out of a feeling. If your not happy, your not living. The more dangerous is the 'unless' in there, it opens the flood gates of unlimited variables of perceived 'happiness'. If you have the flu, your not going to be happy, but that 'unless' puts the demand to find a way to be happy...or else. so you look at 'unhappy' situations as personal failures.
As I said above, 'Happy' is a feeling and every feeling is unique to that happiness, one usually felt after a satisfying act or situation. it should be looked at this way, the benefit of a positive result and all unique to that happiness.
Since your not 'happy' all the time you seek to make others feel 'happy' to help bolster your own feelings and worth, thusly making you happy. But you cant always make everyone happy and this destroys you to 'let someone down' (like your friend in your message) and this brings the whole house of cards down being built on a foundation of other peoples needs and opinions.
On a desert island or in the middle of a million people you are still just yourself. The best mantra is one of intimate personal love for yourself. if you know that, then you will be happy and with you happy it will glow off you onto others. Love
LindsayAlone, that’s my exact fear, that one day I’ll encounter a long hardship and decide to go when it’s simply not the right choice. I hope for you too that you’ll find something that makes you happy, or at least good advice on this post.
KingSolomon, I think “if I an not happy, I am not living” is the perfect way to describe how I feel about all of this. On days when I can’t muster any cheer, I simply let myself fall like a deflated balloon. And yes, unhappiness has become a personal failure... you have such a crazy ability to predict exactly how I feel, have you been through this yourself? But I like your mantra. I think I’ll try it.
Basically it is a calming repetitive mantra about stillness in an undying forest.
