Good Afternoon Friends - I need sincere advice
I'm in a relationship with my boyfriend of 7 years (on and off) but lately I have been feeling as miserable as if I was single AND lonely. I have tried talking to him about the way I have been feeling and how I feel a disconnect in our relationship but just touching the subject usually brings me to tears and he just seems annoyed by it and tells me I'm just a needy and insecure girl. He lives with me and we sleep in the same bed, but that's about it. He seems to think that I should be content with his mere presence and that constant physical affection and attention from him is unnecessary. We barely have sex anymore and when we do it's rarely passionate. I don't feel desired by him anymore. He doesn't tell me I'm beautiful as often as he did in the past and he has become very critical of me recently by deliberately pointing out certain flaws in my body. I see him checking out other girls when we are at the gym and it makes me feel so disrespected.
We started going to gym a lot last year and it went from being a "fit couple" thing to being all about him. He is so full of himself! He has become very vain, always looking and flexing in the mirror, and he no longer waits for me to get home from work to go the gym together, he goes by himself, cooks only his meals and is only concerned with his own progress. To top it off, he even recently started working front desk at our gym and I've seen how friendly, polite and willing he is to help customers and even though I know that's his job, I remember a time when he used to treat me that same way. He doesn't anymore. He barely helps around the house (without me having to ask) and just sits and watches tv or is on his laptop while I cook or do any other chores. I have to literally beg him to pick up after himself. He never takes initiative to help me out with anything and just sits around kind of EXPECTING me to cater to him. I'm that type of girl though. I love catering to my man. What I don't love is when it all goes unnoticed and when everything I do becomes expected instead of appreciated.
I work a well paid full-time desk job and since he just recently started working, I have been the one paying all the bills. However, while he was unemployed, I would leave for work in the mornings and leave him sleeping and I would come home to find him on the couch watching tv... he didn't even try to clean up a little bit, the house would be more messy than it was when I left, and he never EVER took the initiative to cook me some dinner. I would have to come home tired from work to cook and clean for him when he spent all day doing absolutely nothing - plus , again, I was paying all the bills. It's all just so frustrating and depressing!
I would really hate to have to walk out on this long-term relationship but lately I've been realizing that the "long term" part of it is the only thing keeping me in it. I just hate the thought of having to start over again with someone new. I feel ready for marriage and family and it scares me to think that the man I thought was "the one" is in fact NOT. He is an extremely funny and witty guy. He is actually very smart but he never graduated high school because he was one of those rebellious kids -- but I don't really see any serious intent to finish his education though which is another problem because I have a Bachelor's degree and sometimes I feel he is intimidated or almost ashamed about that.
Anyway, once upon a time he treated me like a princess and I hold on to the hopes we can return to that state again but I don't see it happening. :( He is not the greatest looking guy in the world, but now he is in great shape and he is turning some female heads - which was rare before. People have said to us jokingly before that I'm too pretty for him and instead of feeling proud to have me as his girl I actually feel like he resents me. Sometimes I think it is his own insecurities that make him treat me so bad and try to put me down maybe cause he thinks I want someone better or he wants to prove that he can do better.
IDK, I feel like he is trying to prove others wrong by trying to spark the interest of a prettier girl. Or maybe he's just tired of me. or maybe I am needy and insecure and no one else would put up with me like he says. All i know is that I feel extremely lonely and depressed and I'm not sure if I should just stick around to see if he changes or should I just walk away. It is breaking my heart. I'm 24 years old, I don't know how going back to the dating scene would work out for me. I feel like anybody good is already taken.
Please share your kind thoughts.

It's best to never try and change a person, either they naturally legitimately change themselves or you accept them the way they are. If you don't want to accept this type of personality then it will be a matter of dealing or not dealing with it and moving on.
First off it was your choice to live with him and sleep with him for seven years. Any guy would take that deal. The fact that he looks at himself in the mirror and you think he's vain might not be the fact. Never confuse "vanity" with self confidence and being proud of your hard work. Women probably look in the mirror more than most guys and that's a fact. You have to look at it from his side. being "not so good looking" all his life he may have some resentment when it comes to females and now he has the self confidence that he never had before. Isn't it the same when a women loses weight, wears sexy clothing and puts on makeup? they want to be noticed? Look pretty right? Why can a guy not do the same thing?
People change and I guess your lucky not to be married and found out now what his personality is like but to call him selfish and that it's all his fault because he's not what you "groomed" him to be is far fetched. You personally sound a bit controlling IMO I'd be afraid to marry you myself. If your going to get jealous because he wants to have some female friends that is your insecurity to deal with.
You can't "earn" passion. It's either in you or it is not. When you marry you lose all the benefits of being single and many times guys start to feel "pinned down" and become depressed because they no longer have a social life. I'm in that boat myself.
What can I say, life ain't fair kiddo. If it was we'd all have the perfect partner.
Your NOT married hence both parties have the "right" to change as they progress in their relationship. Maybe you should learn better skills as to "what to look for" in a guy hm? This stuff happens every single day. But from reading your complaints about him I can see why he'd could possibly look elsewhere. Just an opinion.
In the supply and demand equation, YOU are what is in demand. You have the negotiating chips. USE THEM.
The only thing I can see that isn't in your favor currently: you need to NOT NEED a man. Once they sense this, they will change their tune and stop taking you for granted. This book is especially helpful on that subject:
http://www.amazon.com/Why-Men-Love-Bitches-Relationship/dp/1580627560/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1390605240&sr=1-1&keywords=why+men+love+bitches
Before you dismiss it out of hand as a manual of reverse-psychology mind games, note that the information therein was gleaned from interviews with men.
You've got much more power than you think.
You have much more time ahead of you than behind.
Take advantage.
STAY AWAY from insecure men. That kind of guy will generally come into the relationship already harboring double standards for what's acceptable behavior on your part vs. his part. He will consider anything he does to be justifiable because of his need to prove himself and feed his ego. You will always be secondary to that ego and he will sacrifice your relationship for it if an attractive enough opportunity presents itself.
and, something i know now that i didnt know at 24 -- forget the how-to books, when you can just be yourself, and direct your attention to your life and what interests/satisfies and fulfills you, rather than how to get and keep someones interest,
you end up finding yourself with someone who is attracted to and wants to be with you just because its you
and then this sort of thing wont be a concern in your life anymore
and you'll feel loved and accepted for who you really are, not the you you think you need to be to keep a guy
But, if the flirting "don't" stop it goes down hill also...
IDK what to say sept when people go to a gym it seems to be all about the self, self image, self confidence, its all ME, ME, ME, but then sometimes a gym is the only place in some locals to get exercise due to the weather.
I bet ur sweet bud there didn't ever do a stint in the military and learn to police his area and surroundings. that in itself don't make him a bad guy...hay I got an Idea.....
BUT, I typed it out and deleted it....ummm...ummmmm....hay i got nothing sorry... :(
Its time to brush the dust off your shoes and start walking. With a BOYfriend like him who needs enemies? Trust me you will find a real man in the future.
You say " So, you're 24, attractive and have a well-paid job. If I"m not mistaken, this means you are young, hot and self-sufficient"
Yeah, ok. Would you say the same if a guy were all those things? No, he'd be a conceded jerk who's stuck on himself. If he's hot looking now and working he doesn't need her and her controlling attitude either.
Have you talked to him about these doubts and concerns? It might be good to have an open dialogue.
You deserve SO much better though!
I have been single for about a year, getting out of a serious long-term relationship and it is hard at first but it is doable if you decide that is best. If I don't find anyone in the next 5 years I am going to adopt a baby on my own! I want kids in my life and marriage but maybe not in the normal order.
Good luck!
