Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I am new here.
For the last two weeks or so I have been unable to consume more than about 400 calories a day. It's not that I don't want to eat, I just feel very ill if I try to. I have some extra pounds, so I'm not in immediate physical danger. Obviously this is making it so that I have a complete lack of energy, which then makes it hard to do the things that could pull me out of the funk.
Now I'm getting stressed about not being able to eat, which adds to the depression and anxiety.
My main relationship is in turmoil, and a beloved pet went missing all at the same time.
I do have a few very good friends, but only a couple of them are local. I feel like a burden if I unload my troubles to my friends (and I don't want me or my partner to be judged).
I have been meditating, doing what I am able to physically, and I start therapy this week (which is worrisome financially). Does anyone have any other coping mechanisms they can recommend?
Thank-you.

I'm horrified! I knew my insurance would go up due to getting a new car but I didn't expect it to go up over $2,000. I did have an accident with the snow/ice in the winter. I was just telling my brother that I have had my car since March 2, 2026 and have only spent $75 on an oil change. Now this! I called another insurance company and their quote was over $4,000. I guess I have to pay...

You seem very self critical, I know it's hard not to be when your feeling low, your a good person and by not eating you are not showing any love to yourself. Please try to eat I've been there I know it's easier said than done.
You need to go into hospital for treatment of an eating disorder as well as seeking psychological and psychiatric support. In hospital, the doctors will introduce nutrition slowly because a rapid increase of calories will cause a refeeding syndrome which triggers an electrolyte imbalance that may lead to neurologic, pulmonary, cardiac, neuromuscular, and hematologic complications.
Our friends on the forum, please encourage OcDeity to get medical treatment immediately. OCDeity, you are jeopardising your life. I do not support your indulgence in your depression when you are endangering your own life. For God's sake, check yourself in a hospital before it is too late.
Try to at least get a serving of protein in per day. How about nuts? Peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios..... any of these would be a good way to start.
Do you like fruits at all? Cereal? Even oatmeal cookies have some nutrition.
Please don't make a bad situation worse by not eating. I hope your therapy appointment helps you. You say the therapy is financially worrisome, but it will cost way more if your organs shut down from not eating.
Stay healthy! Especially now... with the Covid virus going around.... you need to keep up your strength and health. Best wishes.
This is not a choice I am making. I eat everything that my body will accept without it coming back up (on its own, not me trying to make it).
The doctors are unconcerned about my appetite right now.
I am not “indulging” in my depression. I am doing everything I know to get back on track.
If you take Imodium long term, this would cause intestinal atony, when there is no peristalsis in the intestinal tract. If this is the case, then any food you consumed will not be expelled, and the accumulated food waste will cause impaction in your bowel. If the impaction is extensive, this waste bolus may cause your bowel to burst. In the event that you have intestinal atony, you must see the doctor straight away so that they can give you an opioid antagonist to make the intestinal muscles working again.
You need to see a gastroenterologist who can investigate why all your ingested food has gone back up. Do you have an obstruction in the intestinal tract to cause regurgitation of food? If so, you would need an urgent bowel resection to remove the blockage. Do you have an impairment in intestinal absorption of nutrients? If so, the dietician would need to resort to the other 3 invasive route to deliver nutrients to your body.
Your doctors should be concerned about your daily caloric consumption. If your doctors are not concerned that you are consuming 400 calories daily, you should report them to the Medical Board so that the Board could revoke their licences to practise. You have mentioned above how you are too weak due to a lack of energy, that is because you don't consume enough proteins to keep your body alive. If you keep consuming 400 calories daily, you will collapse into a coma, and by that time, it would be too late to save your life.
I did get x-rays at urgent care (second visit) to check for an obstruction. I think the doctors are not concerned about the lack of appetite because the blood work is okay (apart from keytones).
I have only taken Imodium twice, so that part is under control.
I will definitely look into the liquid protein.
