Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I came to college a few days ago, and it is my third year here. However, the homesickness is worse than ever, and it barely even seems tolerable. I have cried non-stop since I said goodbye, and I feel sick and sad constantly. I always hate transitioning to college, and while I eventually warm to it and make a routine - it is so hard. I mostly miss my mother, as we are best friends. While I only live an hour or so away, it's hard to see her as often as I would like and I hate leaving her only (she is divorced and I'm her only child). She wants me to be happy and live my life, but it is so hard when I just want to be home with her. I know I wouldn't be happy going back home without an education, but it is so tempting. I just miss my best friend, and I worry I'll regret spending this time away from her in the future.
I don't know how to feel less homesick. My mother and I talk daily, and I intend to go see her in the coming days - but the time in which I'm not talking to her is so painful I can't function. I just wish that I could be a settled adult near my mom and see her daily still, but I don't want to wish my college years away. Does any one else relate to this? Or have any strategies for dealing with the depression and anxiety and non-motivation, other than getting out more or going home less? That seems to be the online consensus for homesickness after all, is to completely avoid home.

I got an email from Kohl's that I had a 40% off coupon for today and tomorrow only. It took me about an hour but I placed an order and got some great deals. I have been wanting a new dress. I like dressing up sometimes. My birthday is coming up and I have dinner plans at a nice restaurant. But, honestly, I'm a little out of control again. I went through this in the fall. I bought...

Has anyone else noticed that clearly speaking and doing things intentionally is liberating because it helps combat the feeling of depression and a sense of hopelessness? Let me share a little more: in my experience, when those who have tried to project a hidden agenda that is obviously not aligned with integrity and well-being, it's best to be firm and speak clearly from self-awareness and...

It's okay to feel homesick, because it just shows you have a great relationship with your mom! Keep up with the daily calls you have with her because I'm sure she's happy to hear your voice. Just like peterthegreat suggested, maybe you can see a counselor? But I'm talking about a counselor that can help you find coping strategies that work for you, since not all apparently common strategies work for everyone. I visited my school's health services' counselor and she helped me develop a variety of strategies to work with anxiety, depression, and stress. Shoot me a msg if you ever want to talk! You are not alone! HUGS
