Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.

Hi Everyone,
I am a 14 yr Breast Cancer Survivor, who since that time has been in relatively good health except for creeping up LDL levels that just resulted in being placed on Pravastatin.
I recently tripped and almost fell to the ground. The efforts of not falling completely resulted in be banging my side of my left lower leg on a metal and wooden shelf.
I abraised the surface of the skin appeared like road rash. Also the area quickly reddened and was about the diameter of a jumbo egg. Also became firm & hot.
I didn't like the way it looked or felt. The prickly pain and ache was different than any I had had before.
Off to the ED I went...they wanted to ice it and send me on my way. Asked if I knew what a hematoma was...duh!
I INSISTED on an ultrasound despite them telling me a clotcwoyld not be evident for at least 2 days.
what do you know - POSITIVE for a clot. More superficial than deep vein.
They ate crow in the ED needless to say.
My GP starts me on Lovenox injections and Coumadin. Ran tests for hereditary & nonhereditary clotting factors that take a week to get back.
Today is day 4 on everything and by leg injury is turning darker bruised from the red it had been and the prickly tight pain there. But had my first INR/PT drawn and I began 4 days ago at 1.0 and now is only 1.1...so disappointing and worrisome to me!!! Only 0.1 difference after all this???
So GP says he wants Coumadin upped from 10 to 15mg for 2 days then check again .stayvon Lovenox till then.
Should I worry so much or is this pretty standard?
If all goes to plan I was only to have been on Coumadin 3 mths because of clot coming from injury & so far not from underlying factors.
Thanks in advance for all your helpful insights - appreciated!

Look at what my best friend did with my picture!

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
Like - I shoulda insisted on Heparin and so forth...
I guess patience will be key.
Side note - when I am stable I want to be less sedentary & obtain weight loss in small realistic increments.
It is going to be a monumental struggle & one I have avoided and placed on the back burner for far too long.
Reason being I will be carrying the hubby along with me - he has no will power, meds make him so he is hungry an hour after a big meal and is totally inactive and when he does move around he has every ache, crick and pain known to man.
He also has a positive hereditary clotting trait dx'd last Fall when he was hospitalized for THREE PE's at the same time!
So bottom line - doesn't take care of himself except at my insistance and hand-holding.
Don't worry or be disappointed, it can take a bit to get the coumadin dosage stabilized.
Tylenol doesn't cut it.
Would think after all the time keeping it elevated it would not be so uncomfortable.
Doc says its due to a hematoma, bone bruise & clot.
Still it's getting real old...ugh...
