"Daily Strength, a health social networking site that likes to boast about the number of communities it hosts (regardless of the number of actual active members it has), has been sold to an international corporation called HSW International."
That was in 2008.
"HSWI only paid $3.125 million upfront for Daily Strength, with another $3.525 million earnout payable if the website continues to meet some page view targets over the next few years. Traffic to the site has been largely stagnant during 2008, however, so they may have difficulty meeting aggressive projected growth curves. (Of course, the easiest way for a social networking site to increase page views is to break up a page that you used to be able to view on one page into two or more.)"
I found that last sentence rilly rilly interesting. I've always wondered why some forums had all posts in a thread on one long page and others broke it up. Now I know.
I'm gonna close down for the night but this has some information:
HSW International Reports Increased Sharecare Value

Am I missing something here?
And it does sound like Doug was good for DS.
Remark Media also owns websites How Stuff Works and Dimespring. Remark Media used to be called HSW International. Doug Hirsch went to HSW as Senior Vice President but I guess he's now at GoodRX.com as the Co-Founder / CEO.
DS grew fast. They migrated servers a few years back because the amount of traffic was too much and the site kept falling over.
At some point they decided to use Amazon's Cloud servers. Obviously they were not alone in that, NetFlix also went with Amazon Cloud servers too.
Unfortunately Amazon let everyone down, netflix was down over Christmas.
rather than wait for the next Amazon black out DS very quickly decided to shift servers. There was one failed attempt but now they've moved.
Shifting server supplier within less than a month of problems actually isn't that bad going given DS supports about 1.6 million accounts.
As said, I'm very critical of DS at times but I think they've done the right thing this time.
Consider the few employees(very few) and the amount of advertising dollars and I think it's one big money machine for Remark Media. (even though their stock price has sunk to all time lows) I don't think they expected it to turn out being what it has become.lol
The issue is just throw people a freakin' bone, and it can be resolved so easily. That's what's baffling. If DS is made aware that the site is jacked up, just send a message or post a note that says, hey folks, we are aware of a service issue, we're working on it, and will post an update when resolved. Period. It's not rocket science. I mean, if DS can make sure its members are aware of an upcoming poetry contest, surely they can make members aware the site is experiencing difficulties. Yesterday was the first time EVER since I've been on DS (since 2007) where DS sent a message to members notifying them of a system issue, or at least the first time I ever received a message So lets hope this becomes the norm.
This is probably the best site for medical and emotional support and I'd be hard pressed to criticize DS over that. In the past, it has saved my butt. But that support can really be rendered moot if the site can't be appropriately managed from a technical and communication standpoint.
To the original topic, people have been venting on DS without the benefit of knowing they have permission to do so. Given the number of rants and ravings on the DS Members Community Support Group and other communities, one could make that leap.
Usually it comes down to 'follow the money', even if it's as simple a reason as trying to cut expenses (an admirable thing for all businesses).
I would imagine that even the employees at DS might be deploring some of the decisions made by corporate ---- and 'forbidden' to complain or explain.
.....you could always migrate???
